Historic Moye-Green House

Historic Moye-Green House Built before 1878 and one of the oldest houses in Portland. Once run as a boarding house by the Moye and Green families. The original house had two rooms.

The Moye-Green house is owned by the City of Portland and is now occupied by the Portland History Museum. In 1878, Kate Butt Moye and Henry Moye purchased a house and two acres of land from her brother, Alfred Butt. It was located on the east side of the railroad tracks in what was then Richland on land previously owned by Thomas Buntin. In 1882, the front two story section was added, and ten year

s later, the front porch was added to complete the house as it appears now. It is a Victorian style and is located on the corner of North Russell and Wheeler Streets in downtown Portland, Tennessee. The house is owned by the City of Portland and is now occupied by the Portland History Museum.

We are over halfway through our tourism season for Highland Rim Historical Society and our two museums - Portland History Museum and Cold Springs School.

It has been a successful season because of our visitors and volunteers, alike. Thank you!!

As a heads up: Portland History Museum is open today 11AM-5 PM with our extraordinarily knowledgeable Paula Shannon leading our tours today.

HOWEVER, tomorrow as precaution to heat index concerns and no climate control, Cold Springs School will NOT be open our standard Sunday hours.

As a reminder our tourism season runs through the last weekend in September. (Portland History Museum is open during our season Saturdays and Wednesday 11-5. Cold Springs School is open Sundays 1-3.)
