Who Were The Tate Family? Why are they important in pre-and post Revolutionary Maine?
Tate House was built in 1755 for George and Mary Tate from Rotherhithe, England. Tate served as Mast Agent for the British Royal Navy overseeing the harvest and shipment of massive white pine trees from Maine's forests until the American Revolution put a stop to this trade. Tate House offers a rare glimpse into 18th-century life with its impressive period furnishings and represents the lives of a colonial family who lived before and through the American Revolution.

Come help "Burn the Tea" in protest of British Taxes. Tax on tea was widely unpopular in the colonies and some people burned British East India tea in protest, stopped drinking tea, smuggled it, or drank a tea substitute. Tea is NEVER TAXED in the Tate House Museum Gift Shop.
