Today marks the 137th birthday of Yasuo Kuniyoshi. From navigating the immense social, cultural, and political challenges of WWII to making history with the Whitney Museum’s first-ever retrospective for a living artist, Kuniyoshi was a visionary painter, printmaker, photographer, and teacher. Excluded from citizenship and classified an "enemy alien" during the Second World War, his work remains a powerful reflection of the artist’s resilience and humanity.

This provocative, thrilling classic is a fantasy of female rebellion set in America ten years after a social democratic cultural revolution. When the Black radical founder of the Woman’s Army is mysteriously killed, a diverse coalition of women emerges to blow the System apart.

Sun, Sep 6, 2 p.m. | WORKING GIRLS (1986) follows a day in the life of a photographer working part-time in a Manhattan brothel. Throughout the day she juggles a steady stream of clients, balances relationships with her coworkers with the demands of an ambitious madam, and above all fights to maintain her sense of self.

Today is the birthday of Thelma Johnson Streat (1911–1959) who would have turned 115 today. The Yakima, Washington-born artist and educator bridged both visual and performance art and would inspire generations of Northwest artists.

With the support of 1803 Fund Community, the naming of Thelma Johnson Streat Gallery centers the Black Art and Experiences Galleries on Level 1, commemorating her legacy while exhibiting artists of the African diaspora of our time and place. Currently on view: “Tenderhead,” the solo exhibition by artist and educator Lisa Jarrett.
