It’s the very last weekend to catch Jeremy Rotsztain “My Eyes Glaze Over”!

Carnation will be open from 12 to 5 PM this Saturday and Sunday.

Please join us for a closing reception on Sunday from 3 to 5 PM & an artist talk at 3:30.

My Eyes Glaze Over

Coined by physicist/futurist Herman Kahn, “My eyes glaze over” describes an instinctive response to feeling overwhelmed about the future.

In his upcoming solo show at Carnation Contemporary, Jeremy Rotsztain continues his explorations of abstraction using new technologies, creating lenticular images that represent various states of drifting attention, disengaged staring, and zoning out.

The works in “My Eyes Glaze Over” can be approached like analog screens; screens that invite a range of states from meditative to spaced out to overwhelmed. These works were composed with an all-over technique commonly found in Abstract Expressionist painting. Jeremy expands all-overness into three dimensions, crafting computer algorithms to fill the 3D volume of his screens and drawing others by hand. These gestural marks are both a vehicle for moving color through space and for guiding viewers’ drifting gazes through those spaces.

Biography

Jeremy Rotsztain (b. Toronto, Canada) explores contemporary abstraction using code and computer graphics. His work manifests as augmented & virtual reality experiences, lenticular images and 3D animations. His projects often engage with the physical environments that they’re presented in, playing with history, experience of space and color. His work is typically slow in nature, visceral and involves collaborations with electronic musicians. Jeremy’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, including at Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, Zentrum für Kunst und Medien, Geneva International Film Festival and MUTEK. He lives in Portland, Oregon.

EXHIBITION

Experiences once rooted in place, body, and memory are now filtered through screens, algorithms, and digital systems. This shift has created a condition where we increasingly relate to life through technologies that don't just represent reality, but transform it into something else. A kind of copy that can feel more vivid than the original.

Soul of the Hyperreal explores what survives this transformation through interactive installation, video game media, and generative prints. A personal act of mourning is reconstructed as an interactive digital space. A park trail becomes a distant voice, navigated through a rotary phone. Plant life is translated into genetic algorithms that produce new, uncanny forms imprinted onto tactile objects.

These works don't attempt to return to an untouched "real." Instead, they embrace the mediated version. What remains is still recognizable as ritual and form, but changed. Traces of presence, filtered through the systems we use to remember.
