We’re beyond excited to welcome Swiss-born artist 𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 Fabian Lavater to The Purple Door for his debut U.S. solo exhibition!

Coming all the way from the coast of France, Fabian brings a new body of work inspired by the sea, coastal landscapes, and the moments in nature that bring us back to ourselves. In a culture of constant acceleration, Fabian’s work is an invitation to slow down… to go for a swim, catch a wave, watch the clouds, or simply but where you are. Through a reduced visual language, dynamic lines, and a deep sense of stillness, his work creates contemplative spaces that invite us breath and reflect.

…𝘼 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧 — Front gallery ...𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙪𝙚 — Back gallery

In Teresa Christiansen’s work (1st slide, Cactus Skeletons, 14x21”) the landscape begins as a photograph and then becomes something else entirely. She photographs the overlooked details of the natural world, zooming in on flowers, rocks, weeds, grasses, and bushes growing along paths, pavement, and front yards. Back in the studio, she physically cuts, bends, weaves, layers, and illuminates the printed images. Collected specimens are sometimes photographed alongside their printed counterparts, collapsing the distance between object and image.

For Ashley Innis (2nd slide, Stuck Landing, 42x 22”), the landscape is experienced in its vastness. Her photographs are made with a pinhole camera, producing an almost infinite depth of field, optical distortion, and a characteristic soft, dreamy fuzziness. The images are often captured during solo expeditions to alpine lakes, mountain ranges, and river bends far from urban life. The resulting photographs become records not simply of a place, but of her own emotional experience grounding in a sometimes unsettling world.

Together, …𝘼 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧 and ...𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙪𝙚 form a surprising conversation about photography and nature. One artist travels outward into the landscape; the other brings fragments of it inward. Both use photography as a starting point for something more intimate: a record of experience, a meditation on the natural world, and a way of finding meaning within it.

Counting down to our next exhibition, ...𝘼 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧, featuring photographic explorations by Ashley Innis and Teresa Christiansen. Ashley Innis Teresa Christiansen
Opening Friday, August 14, 6–9pm.
..𝘼 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧 is an exhibition of work by artists Ashley Innis and Teresa Christiansen, whose creative paths have crossed from the classroom to the office and into their studios. Together, they explore landscapes through unexpected photographic processes to yield images that ask the viewer to pause and question the making of each.

Innis captures sweeping views of the world around her, focusing on color and form to create immersive, highly stimulating expressions of place. Christiansen turns inward, working with close-up photographs of cacti, rocks, flowers, and leaves, weaving her images with colored papers and found clippings to create intricate studies of texture and light.

Through contrasting perspectives, both artists reveal their hands in the making of each piece. This exhibition is rooted in friendship, collaboration, critique, and the very silly text messages that often end with “…A Memoir.”

In the back gallery, ...𝘼𝙣 𝙀𝙥𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙪𝙚 presents a collection of works made between the work. These pieces offer a continuation of the artists’ conversation, revealing experiments, discoveries, and unexpected moments that expand upon the ideas explored in ...𝘼 𝙈𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙞𝙧.

Nostalgia is calling…

Join us Friday, August 7, from 5pm to 8pm for the closing reception of Nostalgia Potluck.

Spend one final evening with this gathering of works exploring the many meanings and sentiments of nostalgia. Before the exhibition disperses, revisit familiar pieces, discover details you may have missed, experience the conversation these artists have created together, and meet some of the makers behind the work that most inspires you.

Refreshments will be served. We hope you’ll join us for one last look.
