Miscellaneous items from the The New Orleans Pl***oy Club, circa early 1960’s.
The items are, pictured from left to right, a Pl***oy Club bag (from the gift shop located in the club, I believe), a set of club napkins, inside and outside; a Pl***oy Club New Orleans matchbook with swizzle sticks, and lastly, the backside of the matchbook detailing the New Orleans decal & a set of cocktail sticks.
The New Orleans Pl***oy Club, located on 727 Iberville St., opened October 13, 1961. The club had begun as a franchise, but was purchased back by Pl***oy.
Segregation was still full fledged in the South at the time the club opened. The Pl***oy organization had trouble achieving integration in the club, but, New Orleans saxophonist Al Belletto (who was the entertainment director for the club) was able to hire black musicians, even under those limitations.
Featuring a small dance floor, and multiple shows and acts. The downstairs band played *some* rock, but the preferred music in the Pl***oy Club was modern jazz. In New Orleans, the Pl***oy Club was one of the very few locations where modern jazz could be heard.
It closed down permanently sometime in the mid 70’s. ***oyclub
