Commemorative Air Force Missouri Wing

Commemorative Air Force Missouri Wing The Missouri Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Dedicated volunteers maintaining and educating the public about WWII aviation. We currently have a B-25 Mitchell, TBM Avenger, and L-3 Aeronca. Visit us in St. Charles, MO! www.cafmo.org
In July of 1980, 25 dedicated World War II aviation enthusiasts formed a squadron of the C.A.F. in St. Louis, Missouri. One year later, the squadron was granted wing status and became the 25th C.A.F. Wing. Located at St. Charles County Airport/Smartt Field, the Wing currently maintains three aircraft as well as a museum dedicated to the memory and bravery of all those who served. The Wing membership consists of over 100 volunteers that cover administration, maintenance, mechanics, pilots, docents and many other responsibilities.

Navy takes it again!!!! They have an amazing streak going! Army is going to have to bring it next year if they are going to stop it. We had an amazing turnout even with the weather delay last week. Thank you for everyone that made it possible. Thank you to St. Charles flying service for putting on an amazing event. Now it’s time for some winter maintenance. Looking forward to seeing everyone next season!

“Flying is a great equalizer. The plane doesn’t know or care about your gender as a pilot, nor do the ground troops who need your support. You just have to perform. That’s all anyone cares about when you’re up there – that you can do your job, and that you do it exceptionally well.” — Lt. Col. Christine Mau. Photo taken by Mike Fuller

Nice work by our helicopter brothers and sisters!

What a truly amazing story! A huge shout out to our friends at the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation who scrambled a Huey that was giving rides close to the downed Snowbird pilot, to aid in his recovery. Folks, THIS is history in action. THIS is why we fight to keep them flying. THIS is truly what the vintage aviation community is all about: preserving our heritage - educating the next generation - history in action - serving our community. By the way, this is Huey 624 “Lucky Star”. This particular helo was crashed and rebuilt 3 times in a time span of less than 40 days during the Vietnam War. She is a true survivor herself, a true piece of living history, still able to provide the same service she did so many years ago in Vietnam. Fantastic job to the AAHF! Photo courtesy AAHF.

We are saddened by the loss of life of those involved in the incident this morning. The aviation community is small and tight knit. We share the same goals of passing on the stories and history of these aircraft and the men and women who built, maintained, and flew these historic aircraft. Please pray for those involved and those who will have a long recovery ahead of them.

CAF PUBLIC STATEMENT -- This morning a B-17 Flying Fortress, a WWII bomber, owned and operated by the Collings Foundation was involved in an incident at Bradley International Airport in Connecticut. This is a developing situation and there are very few details at this time. As a member of the warbird community we stand to support the Collings Foundation during this difficult time.

STATEMENT TO MEMBERS -- As CAF members, the best thing we can do right now is not speculate on what happened or feed into the conversations online regarding what they "could have" or "should have" done. Our B-17 units, Gulf Coast Wing and CAF Airbase Arizona are working hard dealing with the press who are asking questions. I am so grateful for their effort and professionalism during this difficult situation.

Today is the 74th Anniversary of the formal surrender ceremony held on the U.S.S. Missouri in Tokyo bay officially ending WWII. The B-25 Connection? B-25s from the 345th escorted the surrender party.

Rest In Peace and thank you for your service. We will remember!

It is with great sadness we announce the Capital Wing has lost a true American Hero, TBM Avenger turret gunner Stan Grube.

Stan passed after a brief illness during recovery from vascular surgery August 13, 2019, in the Chambersburg, PA, hospital, at 96 years-old.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on board U.S.S. Hornet (CV-12) at the Battles of Leyte Gulf and Iwo Jima. Departing the Navy at the end of WWII, he was later recalled to service in the Korea Conflict.

Stan and his wife, J. Darlene (Davis), were married over 59 years.

It would be an honor to Stan, his family, (and the Greatest Generation) for any of our wing members and fans to come out and celebrate this WWII Hero. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 19, 2019, in Green Hill Cemetery, 953 S. Potomac Street, Waynesboro, PA.

Due to a maintenance issue the B-25 will not be meeting up with the TBM Avenger at Sioux Falls Airshow this year. Fear not the TBM crew is excited to provide rides and amazing experiences for all! Hope you can make it out to see one of the most iconic naval aircraft of WW2.

From our friends at the CAF Ground Forces!

From our friends at the CAF Ground Forces!

If you've ever been inside of a WWII Sherman tank you know there isn't a whole lot of room. After looking at this picture, it would probably be considered exceptionally spacious to the Japanese!

This M4A2 "Killer" was a part of the 4th Marine Tank Battalion. On the back of it's hull is a Type 94 "Tankette", one of only 823 manufactured by the Japanese between 1935-1937.

One significant item on Killer is the bottom section of a fording stack (just behind the tankette), which allowed the tanks to be launched from an LST far from shore. Unlike the more commonly known "Duplex Drive" or DD Tanks, which allowed the tanks to float on top of the water, the deep wading gear (including the fording stack) allowed the tank to essentially drive along the bottom, almost submerged.

The other modification of note for Killer is the wooden planks along the side of the tank. These planks were used to counter the Japanese Type 99 magnetic mine. The 4th Marine Tank Battalion was one of the first units to adopt this countermeasure. Often the void between the planks and the hull were filled with concrete for additional protection.

The Marine in the foreground is PFC N.E. Carling, who is resting his hand on another Japanese tank, this one a Type 97 Te-Ke Light Tank.

The photo was taken on February 2nd, 1944 on the small island of Namur during Operation Flintlock (which aimed to capture the Kwajalein and Eniwetok atolls). The colorization was done by Rui Candeias.

We have the best supporters with so many calls of concern. Again as we stated below.... the Dance will Return in 2020!!!
