Long Island Explorium

Long Island Explorium Our vision is to be a leader in STEM discovery, learning and innovation that will shape the intellect, social values and principles of future generations.
(32)

Driven by the notion that learning is its own fun, the Long Island Explorium is tapping into the most current research on best practices in education to create exhibits and programs that offer kids the chance to find out, for themselves, just how much fun real learning is! Interactivity enables children to learn at their own pace and, more importantly, in a way that suits their individual style. Of course, the museum is all about learning, but we believe that learning is at the heart of having a good time. The museum’s programs are designed around playful and purposeful experimentation that includes sensory, kinesthetic, logical, spatial, artistic, linguistic and emotional intelligences. Each exhibit invites children to confront interesting STEM challenges and design their own unique responses. At seasonally changing exhibits, children and their families engage with science, history, math and art in a way that cultivates a deeper understanding of themselves and the world as a whole. Winter, spring, summer and fall, there’s always something new at the Long Island Explorium.

Mission: Families exploring the fun and interactive hands-on exhibits at the Long Island Explorium at Port Jefferson will enjoy the excitement of scientific discovery, develop a broadened cultural awareness and experience a sense of artistry while learning about Long Island's rich and varied maritime heritage.

Mercury and Venus always appear close to the sun in Earth's morning and evening skies because they are closer to the sun than Earth is. Today is Mercury's greatest evening elongation, meaning that it is at its greatest angular distance from the sun. Be sure to take a look at the sky tonight!

NASA's preliminary assessment from the Green Run hot fire test on Jan. 16 indicates that the data acquired met the goals for a number of the 23 detailed verification objectives.

Currently, the SLS core stage can still be loaded with propellant and pressurized 20 more times, for a total of 22 cycles. Hardware inspection and data assessment will continue, and will inform NASA’s decision on whether to conduct a second Green Run test or proceed with shipping the core stage to Kennedy for integration with other SLS hardware in the Vehicle Assembly Building.

Happy Perihelion!! The closest day to the sun.

January 2, 2021
Happy Perihelion!! The day when Earth, in its oval orbit, is closer to the Sun than on any other day of the year.
——-
The new year begins with planet Earth at the closest point in its orbit around the Sun, called perihelion, on January 2nd. Now you may have learned in school that Earth orbits a certain distance from the Sun and that its orbit is nearly circular. The average distance from Earth to the Sun is called an astronomical unit, but since our orbit is not a perfect circle, it means sometimes we're a bit closer to the Sun, and sometimes farther away.

Astronomers call this celebrated point in Earth's elliptical orbit around the sun perihelion, from the Greek roots peri meaning near and helios meaning sun. At its closest point, Earth swings to within 91,399,453 miles (147,093,162 km) of the sun.
