Our own Andrew Kercher was guest host on WPHM Radio this morning, and had Depot Dave Dazer on to talk about Thomas Edison and some of the more spooky inventions he was involved with for Halloween. Listen here:

Oct. 30th has been known to many in Michigan as Devil's Night. Devil's Night mischief reached its peak in the 1980s, with hundreds of fires being started the night before Halloween all over the state, especially in urban areas. Port Huron had its fair share of mayhem. 40 years ago today, the head of the statue on top of Van Crane's grave was ripped off and has not been seen since. The statue was bought by Crane on a trip to Toledo, as it was the spitting image of his late wife. Where do you think the head lies? Is it still out in someone's garage, or the back of a closet, or did it wind up in the Smith's Creek landfill or the bottom of Lake Huron? If you have any tips, message the museum! It would be interesting to reunite the head and statue after all these years...

This aerial photo from the mid-1960s shows the modern day site of the SC4 campus, and Erie square. The bridge at the top of the photo is the 7th street bridge, and the large rectangular building at the left side of the photo is the Jr. Arena, now the SC4 Fieldhouse. What is the biggest change you've noticed in Port Huron during your lifetime?

A laker and a salty sail past the Lightship LV-103 on station at Corsica Shoals near Port Huron. Date not noted. Peter Vander Linden collection/MHSD.

The lightship, built in 1921, served at various locations but spent 36 seasons at Corsica Shoals, carrying the name Huron. It was replaced by a buoy in 1970 and has operated as a museum vessel in Port Huron since then. https://www.phmuseum.org/huron-light-ship-museum/

October 18, 1931 Thomas Edison, Port Huron’s most famous resident, dies in West Orange, New Jersey from complications of diabetes. While much of his family, including his parents are buried in Lakeside Cemetery, he is laid to rest behind his home, Glenmont.

Pictured here is his death mask, on display at the Edison National Historic Site in New Jersey where he died. The time clock from his office there shows the last time he passed by. His body laid in state in his office and then was taken to his home. 7:10 was painted on the dial. Hard to see, but someone originally scratched on the glass the same time.

50 years ago today, work was nearing completion on one of the first stretches of the river boardwalk near the Blue Water Bridge. 30 years ago this week, potential plans for the second span of the Blue Water Bridge were unveiled. At the time, the public overwhelmingly liked a duplicate of the original bridge, however, the very similar looking continuous tied arch design was chosen to save money. Which one was your favorite? Are you happy with the way the iconic spans turned out?

35 years ago today, a still unsolved murder was discovered in the Blue Water Area. James R Brown was remembered by neighbors as a bit of a loner with a quick temper. He had a degenerative eye condition that left him nearly blind, so he would routinely walk the 8 miles from his home into the city of Yale for supplies. When neighbors hadn’t seen him make the trek for a few days, they went to check on him, and discovered a grizzly scene. When they arrived at his house on Jeddo Road, they found Brown dead on the kitchen floor from a single round to the head, and two .25 caliber handguns on the table.

When police arrived on scene and began a more thorough investigation, they found that Brown was clutching a loaded gun in his pocket. Upon autopsy, it was determined that none of the weapons in the home fired the shot that killed Brown. There was no sign of forced entry, and nothing was taken from the residence. Even the cash in his wallet was undisturbed. Neighbors thought it was especially strange that the house was found unlocked, as Brown was in the habit of locking doors, even when he was home.

Brown had recently gone through a messy divorce and ongoing custody battle, and was just days away from his first unsupervised visit from his 6 year old daughter.
No suspects were ever named, and the case remains open to this day.
