December 7, 1941, is the date of the surprise Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a pivotal event that brought the United States into World War II, with President Roosevelt famously calling it "a date which will live in infamy". The attack crippled the Pacific Fleet, resulted in over 2,400 American deaths, and led to the U.S. declaring war on Japan the next day, formally entering the global conflict.
USNTC Bainbridge was activated on 1 October 1942 to train recruits in response to the war efforts. By the end of World War II, the center had trained 244,277 recruits of which went on to serve on various ships and stations throughout the world.
