***********
The Pompeiian Villa, was built in 1900 for Isaac L. Nimmons and W. Fellows, of Chicago, designed the house in a classic revival

style with a raised Roman Doric portico. The Villa changed hands for the first time in 1901 when James Hopkins of St. Louis purchased it. He leased it as a hunting and fishing getaway for his wealthy friends until 1903. George Craig purchased the villa for $10,000 in Texas Company stock, which at the time amounted to 10 percent of the company. We know this company today as Texaco, and that stock would be worth more than a billion dollars.

Port Arthur! We hear you loud and clear. “When will the Pompeiian Villa be reopened?” Well, we are working towards that as we speak.

Over the last year, the Villa has been closed to perform long-needed services and overhauls; most notably, foundation work has been conducted to help stabilize the 126-year-old home. At the same time, crews worked diligently to upgrade much of the original electrical outlets and equipment to ensure that the system operates properly.

To prepare for the work, museum staff carefully removed nearly all of the Century-old furnishings to protect the most valuable pieces. These were stored offsite during the maintenance. But now, all of the pieces are back into place.

One of the final legs of this process includes a thorough cleaning of the Villa. From scuffs on the hardwood floors to cracks on the walls from foundation and water issues, we are in the process of wrapping up these final phases so that we can finally reopen the Pompeiian Villa for all to enjoy.

As we close in on opening day, we will announce a grand reopening, ensuring that the Villa is in the best condition that we can deliver to the city of Port Arthur and her people. Thank you for your patience, and we’re looking forward to it!
