Did You Know?
The gazebo at the Marland Mansion is part of the historic estate. A historical document prepared for the National Register of historic places identifies the gazebo among the estate's original outbuildings. It shares architectural characteristics with the mansion, including stone construction and red tile roofs
The mansion and its landscaped grounds are known for their grand architecture and elegant garden features.

The estate had formal entrances and gates, including a west gate. Guests arriving for events were brought through the west entrance into the estate. The main road from that entrance continued through the inner wall toward the mansion's porte-cochère—the covered entrance where automobiles could pull up and passengers could get out under protection from the weather.

One particularly interesting detail is that the estate was designed to make the approach to the mansion part of the experience. Marland had planted rose hedges along approximately two miles of the preserve's fencing, creating what was envisioned as part of a grand entrance drive called Sunbonnet Drive.

So those gates weren't merely decorative—they were part of a carefully planned estate entrance and security/arrival system for what was essentially Marland's private country estate.

Did You Know?
The North Terrace carvings at Marland Mansion, near the north terrace balcony and Latin inscriptions. This area combines mythical creatures, elaborate stone supports called corbels, Marland used Mythical Creatures to symbolize power and protection. Its literal meaning is “To each person, their own home is the safest refuge.” “A man’s home is his castle” is the familiar English expression used to explain it, including by Oklahoma’s official tourism website.

Did You Know?
The Hall of Merriment is a great example of how E. W. Marland used humor and symbolism in an otherwise extremely formal mansion.

The Hall of Merriment is at the bottom of the grand staircase on the first floor. Its name comes from four whimsical carved figures representing the idea “Eat, drink and be merry.”

If you look up at the ceiling—
The monks are: eating a turkey leg, one is drinking from a stein, another is drinking from a flask & the fourth is taking a pinch of s***f.

Did You Know?
The downspouts at the mansion, they are actually a remarkable decorative feature of the mansion.The mansion’s original drainage system included lead gutters, drainpipes, and water boxes. They were not simply functional plumbing—the pieces were elaborately decorated and incorporated the Marland family’s “M” initial and the date 1927.

The little limestone boathouse was located at the edge of one of the estate lakes. It wasn't merely decorative: it was used for storing boats used on the lake. The building contained a large safe built into one of its interior walls. Even more interestingly, the boathouse was connected to the mansion by an underground tunnel.

That tunnel is one of the features that gives the estate some of its legendary "secret passage" character. It also makes practical sense for a wealthy household: servants could move between portions of the estate without having to cross the grounds in bad weather, and valuable items could be moved discreetly.

And those stairs down to the boathouse...

The long flight of stone steps descending toward the lake/boathouse should be understood as part of the original estate's elaborate landscaping. They weren't simply a modern path built to get visitors down to the water.
