See GRO Artist, Zea Morvitz at Art Works Downtown.

Zea Morvitz:
“I discovered alchemy through images reproduced from European alchemical texts of the Medieval and Early Modern periods. The images intended both to illustrate laboratory procedures and to conceal or disguise them. To me, they portrayed mythical beings performing strange rites in a world separate from, yet subtly connected to, our own. I wanted to enter that world. I imagined myself as a naïve scholar seated at a table with alchemists and figures from alchemical treatises, listening to their conversations and taking notes. Woven into their alchemical discourse were fragments of wisdom surviving from the Classical world. Although the scene was imaginary, my notebook was real, filled with words, sketches, and ideas. I selected images and phrases that carry meaning in our world—and transformed them into a series of paintings.”

GRO Artist, Steven Hurwitz: "You Can't Get There From Here"
A collection of abstract multimedia constructions.

Hurwitz writes “I believe all creative expression is autobiographical and is therefore a personal discovery process, a revealed link between the intellectual and the intuitive. I try to keep it simple and most of all fun.

Visiting Artist, Geoffrey Campen: "Offcut"
Hand-drafted architectural plans altered with mixed-media layering.

Campen writes: "I’ve long been conflicted my role in a building process that generates enormous waste and does not often have a collaborative relationship with the natural environment—houses demolished before their time, materials cut and discarded because of the standard lengths and shapes they're milled in, trees/forests cleared for material and also land to build on, etc. This unease shapes my work.

GRO Artist, Bruce Mitchell: "Gravitational Pull"
Fine art wood sculptures.

Mitchell writes: "Making art is something I absolutely have to do because it fills my life with a delight. What makes that experience so fulfilling for me is exploring the connection between my feelings for the material and the sense of discovery that happens in the making of an object.
