Marshall County History Nugget #26 is about Marshall County’s Little Sister of Liberty.

October 28, 2026 is the 140th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. In 1949 the Boy Scouts of America initiated a program entitled “Strengthening the Arm of Liberty”. Each Scout troop raised $300 to $350 to purchase a “Little Sister of Liberty”. The dedication of Plymouth’s Little Sister at the courthouse was on July 4, 1951. The text of the marker reads: “With the faith and courage of their forefathers who made possible the freedom of these United States the Boy Scouts of America dedicate this copy of the Statue of Liberty as a pledge of everlasting fidelity and loyalty to the crusade to strengthen liberty. 1951.”

Marshall County History Nugget #25 is about Anthony Nigo, the Last Indian in Marshall County.

Anthony Nigo is known as the last Indian in Marshall County. When the Potawatomi were removed on the Trail of Death in 1838, Anthony, whose Potawatomi name was Otowa Onago, said that his mother was a Miami Indian, and that by tribal custom a child belonged to his mother’s tribe. Therefore, he was allowed to remain even though his father was a Potawatomi. Anthony purchased land near Bourbon, built a cabin, voted, and lived in Marshall County the rest of his life until his death.

Marshall County History Nugget #24
Is about Potawatomi Wildlife Park.

Potawatomi Wildlife Park has over 300 acres of fields, woodlands, forest, ponds, bogs, meadows and wetlands, bordered by the Tippecanoe River. The park preserves the sites of historic Indian encampments, including an early 1800s Potawatomi village. It also preserves a ford at the Tippecanoe River where several Indian trails crossed the river. A restored 1834 cabin, the oldest structure in Marshall County, is in the park. In 2002 Potawatomi Wildlife Park was recognized as Indiana’s First Dark Sky Preserve.

Marshall County History Nugget #23 is about the Izaak Walton League Clubhouse which was constructed by the WPA around 1936. Its stonework was one of stonemason Bill Foker’s last jobs. The two story building has a double fireplace and kitchen on each floor. The upper room is finished in sand finish plaster and has a barrel ceiling. The structure is built of stone veneer and the stone pillars front a large porch. A circular gravel driveway and a double terrace complete the area around the building. The facility is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
