Join us today, from 6-7pm, for Tree Talk: Arboreal Observers: Exploring New Hampshire’s Environmental History Through Trees with Simon Pendleton! This lecture will be hybrid, held both at the Museum of the White Mountains and online via microsoft teams.

If you're interested in joining, be sure to register! Find out more information on our website via the link in our bio!

This discussion will be about how our planet continues to change rapidly around us and the importance of understanding modern environmental change in the context of past change. Here in New Hampshire, we have just begun to scratch the surface of these archives and what they tell us about past environmental change and how it compares to ongoing shifts due to climate change and land use changes. We will discuss buried forests along New Hampshire's coast and their connection to glacial history to tree rings from the White Mountains recording everything from ecological change to wildfires.

📣 Opening Today! 📣

Join us for the opening reception of our new exhibition, Rooted: A Story of Trees - Wednesday, November 12th from 5:00-7:00pm!

Rooted: A Story of Trees is born from the powerful connection between individuals and the trees that shape Plymouth State University’s campus. Inspired by PSU’s Adopt-a-Tree Program, this exhibition invites visitors to step into the heart of PSU’s natural environment and explore the incredible diversity of trees that thrive here. What began as a simple initiative to nurture these trees has evolved into a broader movement that underscores the importance of tree stewardship, education, and sustainability. Developed through a collaboration between the Museum of the White Mountains, Dr. Eden Bowditch, and PSU students from a wide range of academic disciplines, this exhibition aims to engage visitors on multiple sensory levels. By blending artistic interpretation with ecological education, we invite our audience to immerse themselves in the story of just a few of the many trees that define our campus.

Light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you there!

From indigenous Abenaki relationships with the land to the colonial quest for mast pines marked with the King’s Broad Arrow and the 1772 Pine Tree Riot - a spark of resistance that foreshadowed revolution - New Hampshire's forests have shaped our identity, economy, and independence. A student of American Government and 20-year veteran of local and county government in New Hampshire now serving at the state level, Executive Councilor Karen Liot Hill will talk about the significant role that trees played in our state's founding days and beyond.
