The ban on in*******al marriage in the U.S. was overturned because of one couple in 1967. Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter were married in the District of Columbia June 1958. When they returned home to Virginia, they were arrested and convicted as their marriage was a violation of state law- Richard was white and Mildred was not. After each faced a year in jail, Loving v Virginia was put before the Supreme Courts and the bans on in*******al marriage were deemed unconstitutional after a nine-year legal battle. It was a landmark victory for couples of different races and the Lovings’ are often heralded as being the catalysts for making it happen.

Enslaved persons at Somerset like Alpheus Littlejohn (1852-1916) were legally barred from getting an education. Yet his daughter Amy Littlejohn Roberts (1878-1935) broke this barrier by graduating from Elizabeth City State Normal School in 1895, while her brother Peter Wallace Littlejohn (1896-1975) later became the principal of Creswell Colored School.

This is an interesting tid-bit about North Carolina.

Historically Black Universities were first founded in Pennsylvania and Ohio right before the Civil War. Originally they were created to give Blacks the training to become teachers or tradesmen. After the Civil War HBCU's were founded in the South with help of the Freedman's Bureau. The first HBCU founded in the south was Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina which was founded in 1865.

The 11 #HBCUs are: Shaw University, North Carolina Central University, Bennett College, Saint Augustine's University, Livingstone College, Fayetteville State University, Winston-Salem State University, Johnson C. Smith University, North Carolina A&T State University, Elizabeth City State University and Barber-Scotia College!

During Black History Month we will be posting important moments of Black History in order to remember the many important people and moments that have helped the Black communities advance towards equality in the United States.

On this day 61 years ago these four students from North Carolina A&T College sat at an all-white counter wanting to just be served a simple lunch. This sit-in sparked many other sit-ins and other peaceful protests. These four men made an important contribution to the black communities. The four men are Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil.

Sixty-one years ago today, the Greensboro Four asked to be served at a Woolworth lunch counter, sparking a sit-in movement that changed history. As we remember their courage, let's honor them by speaking out against racial injustice.

03/20/2020

Thank you everyone for your patience. After serious consideration and looking at the outlook for the next few months, we have made the tough decision to cancel Living History Weekend. The thought of canceling Living History was not an easy one, but due to the CDC, Governor, and President's recommendations we decided it was the best decision for the safety of everyone. With people traveling from all over the United States and then the possibility of infecting a large number of people we wanted to reduce this possibility. We hope that everyone stays safe during this strange time, and will be refunding all of the fees that have been paid in advance.

At the moment we are looking to reschedule the tea to a future date. Stay Tuned to get more information about the new date.

03/17/2020

Due to Safety concerns we are now closed to the public until further notice. During this trying time we hope everyone stays safe and healthy. We will be updating people here on Facebook. As of right now we will be answering calls, emails, and mail as soon as we can.
