This week's gives us another angle of a famous Stevens Point building. Do you recognize it?

This is the back side of Old Main on the UW-Stevens Point campus in 1968, taken for the Stevens Point Journal. UWSP had just built a heating plant on the north side of campus, near the dorms, and the original heating plant was being torn down. The space where the original heating plant was located became green space and later, a parking lot.

On the edges of the photo you can see the west and east wing additions to Old Main, which were made in 1901 and 1914. In 1977 these wings were removed and the structure was renovated back to the original size, and it was converted to an administration building.

The second photo is from the Doug Wojcik collection, showing Old Main in 2001. Old Main has been the main administration building on campus for almost 50 years!

We wish you all a happy Memorial Day as we take the day to remember our fallen servicemen and women.

SPJ caption from 5/31/1966: Three youngsters found a ringside seat across the street from the Civil War monument and watched the flags go by in the Memorial Day parade.

In 1966 there were 1,596 flags placed on veteran graves in Portage County. A parade started at the Stevens Point South Side Memorial Park that morning, with services held at the South Side monument, Civil War monument, Schumann-Heink Memorial, and at Mead Park.

This week's is a mystery, and we need your help!

Our records say this is the Stevens Point City Band during a practice. But we do not know when, where, or who is in the photograph. What do you recognize?

Be sure to visit during open hours to walk through the Rhythms of the River exhibit. This is a great summer to explore more local music history!

Happy Wednesday! For this week's we are looking at an undated photo of the Jacobs House. The Jacobs House was opened in 1873 by Nicholas Jacobs. Started as a two-story building, in the 1880s the east wing and third story were added. The barn behind the hotel could hold 50 teams of horses!
In 1921 the Jacobs House was sold and demolished to make way for the Whiting Hotel. You can still see the Whiting Hotel today, on the corner of Strongs Avenue and Clark Street.
