Many visitors during our open houses, especially during fair season, always ask us if the trains ever get into wrecks (or if we can make a wreck happen for them).
Can we intentionally make a wreck happen, unfortunately no as our members’ equipment can be very expensive. That said, do wrecks happen by accident from time to time? Like on a real railroad, yes.
And as these photos suggest, like in the real world, accidents can and have been everything from a locomotive derailing on a switch to a multi-car pileup. And by the way, none of these accidents were staged.

So stop by during your fair visit and see all of our best HO and O Scale model trains in action and don’t forget to tag us in your social media posts (Alameda County Central Railroad Society here on Facebook and on Instagram)!

East Broad Top Doodlebug No. M-1 is a unique new addition to our O Scale Narrow Gauge (On3) layout! Look for it running during our next public event, the annual Alameda County Fair June 19th-July 12th!
M-1 is a 1927 gas-electric car built by EBT under license from Brill and is based on Brill’s Model 250 railcars. The car features a Brill engine, air tanks, and trucks with the electrical systems and four 75 horsepower traction motors coming from Westinghouse.
Today, the East Broad Top Railroad is a national historic landmark and the last surviving three-foot narrow gauge railroad east of the Rockies. It was built in 1872 to serve local coal and iron industries and M-1 was used to shuttle passengers and mail on days the mines were closed.
Full history of the M-1 can be found at https://oldeastie.com/Loco/m1.html .
