May 1 is National Day of Scrapbooking. We highlight a few images from an antique 1800s scrapbook in our museum collection. Scrapbooks give insight into the time period through newspaper clippings and artwork or even personal writings
Do you see anything surprising? Look carefully at the whimsical artwork of the vegetables. It contains a cut out photo of a person and proves that scrapbooks are as individual as those who made them.
Thomas Jefferson and Mark Twain both kept scrapbooks.
The museum scrapbook previously belonged to the Hoy family of Platte County.

Today is V-J Day. On Sept. 2, 1945, the Japanese signed the papers for surrender. Platte County veterans who served in WWII remember this day. From a hospital room, Ray H, heard the news –he had only one word for what he felt -β€œRELIEF!”
All night long on August 14 into the 15th, the day the Japanese initially surrendered, Parker heard hundreds of ships blowing their whistles in a harbor in the Philippines. The war was over. On Sept. 2 more celebration commenced.
While serving on the USS Macomb, James "Rocky" Tankersley could see the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. On this day, 75 years ago, Rocky witnessed the peace treaty being signed. In 2019, Rocky along with many other WWII veterans shared his story with Platte Co Historical Society (Ben Ferrel Museum); with sadness we have learned that Rocky passed away this spring.
These are but a few moments from a few Platte County veterans' memories. Today we honor all WWII veterans.

For many immigrants in the nineteenth century who were escaping persecution, poverty or other hardship, Fourth of July was a new and special holiday. An immigrant from Prussia (Germany), Frederic Krause, in 1882-1883, built the mini mansion that became our museum.
We wish everyone a safe and happy Fourth of July!

If you are available on September 14, come to the foxhunting historical presentation and beforehand meet Blueskin outside the First Christian Church. I named her after the favorite mount of a reasonably famous American who also lived and loved foxhunting. Blue, will be tacked up in the traditional foxhunting manner (you know, sissy English saddle, etc.). Here she is several years ago standing near what we call the Tree of Patience...for with some virtues one is born...while others must be learned. See you there!! Rob
