Yesterday was Flag Day, a time to celebrate the adoption of the American flag, and to reflect on the history and meaning behind it. Here at the Mabee Regional Heritage Center, located in the Jimmy Dean Museum, one of the most meaningful flags in our collection is the military service flag connected to Jimmy Dean’s time in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Before becoming a household name in music, television, and business, Jimmy served in the Army Air Corps during World War II; the flag displayed here later draped his coffin and was presented to his wife, Donna, following his burial with full military honors 🇺🇸

This image captures the early vision for the Museum of the Llano Estacado, a project brought to life through the combined efforts of Wayland Baptist College and the local community 50 years ago. The original concept proposed a multi-story museum building with an outdoor amphitheater. With strong community support, the museum committee quickly began fundraising and raised more than $800,000 to help make the museum a reality.
