Here is our 2025 John L. Ford, Sr. African American Heritage Celebration - With Valor We Served!

WITH VALOR WE SERVED: The Black Experience During the Vietnam War Era

Approximately 300,000 African American soldiers served during the Vietnam War, representing a disproportionately high percentage compared to their population at the time. Those that served faced challenges related to racial discrimination both during and after their service. Many viewed their service in Vietnam as a tangible way to demonstrate their patriotism and fight for equality at home. Join us to learn about the Black experience during the Vietnam Era.

Our artifacts for this week is a pair of boots worn by Colonel Keith Detwiler. Colonel Detwiler wore these boots while serving in Afghanistan to demonstrate their quality. He also personalized the boots by writing his blood type along the top edge.

The "Kabul Melli" stamp on the side of these military boots identifies the manufacturer in Afghanistan. Check back soon to learn more about these boots and the soldier that wore them!

Operating as an overreaching civilian entity, the U.S. Merchant Marine manages commercial use of navigable waters. However, in times of war or national emergency they become the “Fourth Arm of National Defense”; operating as an auxiliary unit to the Navy and bearing the brunt of delivering troops, supplies and equipment overseas to our forces and allies. This program will examine the origins and history of this “overlooked” branch of the military as artifacts and stories from our collection will be highlighted. Join us on June 12th which will mark the 250th anniversary of the first recognized action of the U.S. Merchant Marine in 1775.

POW/MIA bracelets, like this one honoring Major Thomas Clark, were made to honor Prisoners of War and soldiers who were Missing In Action. They would be kept by the soldier's loved ones, then presented to the soldier when they returned home. For those who did not return, however, the bracelets acted as a solemn reminder of the missing soldier.

Major Thomas Clark unfortunately did not return home to receive the bracelet. In 2009 his remains were discovered in Laos, and Major Clark was buried in his hometown of Emporium, PA in 2011. The bracelet created in his honor is now part of our Footlocker Outreach Program.
