Happy Friday the 13th!

Did you know that Roberto Clemente wore #13 for the first seven weeks of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates?

He wasn’t assigned his famous #21 until his teammate who had been wearing the number, outfielder Earl Smith, was optioned to New Orleans of the Southern Association on May 3rd, 1955.

There are many theories as to why he ditched #13 and chose to sport number 21 the rest of his career. Many notice that he had previously worn the number with his Puerto Rican teams, but does anyone know another reason it’s believed he chose #21? Let us know in the comments!

¡Feliz viernes 13!

In honor of the 125th kicking off today at we wanted to present Roberto Clemente’s golf clubs that he received as part of his 1971 sponsorship deal with . As legend has it, Clemente used these clubs only once, throwing them on the ground upon arriving home and exclaiming to Vera, “I never want to golf again! I can’t waste six hours of my day when I have so much I could be doing!”. We’ve all been there Roberto!

Continuing on with our this week!

Hobbyists are conflicted on the style of the 1970 Topps set. Some think the gray-border is dull and dismal, while others argue the simple design offers an understated elegance.

For the ( #350) Roberto Clemente card, the gray borders and Clemente’s name in black script complete the modest look.

The 720 card release was the biggest issue to date, but it came with an increase in price tag from five cents to ten cents for the wax packs.

Because of the increase in price, Topps introduced three different inserts for their 1970 series. In each wax pack, collectors would receive a booklet, a poster, or a scratch-off.

The gray borders on these cards tend to be susceptible to chipping and a straight white or black line can often be found along the top or bottom border. Those lines were placed on the cards to establish where they were to be cut.

An important piece in our card collection for sure!

1972, Roberto Clemente and longtime team physician Dr. Joseph Feingold in the training room photographed by Les Banos.

Earlier that year in late February 1972, Roberto Clemente flew from Puerto Rico to Miami, with the eventual destination being Bradenton, Florida for Spring Training. Upon arrival, Clemente was quarantined until he could prove he had received the smallpox vaccination. Dr. Finegold, who had treated Clemente for over a decade, traveled to Miami to sign Clemente’s vaccination card, which is on display at the museum.
