The August Wilson African American Cultural Center (AWAACC) relies on its members annual contributions to support all areas of its general operations, including fine art, education, and community programs. Admission to the AWAACC is FREE and open to the public.

The Center also offers FREE or deeply reduced ticket prices to special programs to the community.

Your membership gift makes that possible and helps ensure that everyone has access to visual art and entertainment, and education experiences offered by the Center – FREE of charge, including the permanent exhibit dedicated to the life and work process of August Wilson, August Wilson: The Writer’s Landscape.

In partnership with Chamber Music Pittsburgh, the August Wilson African American Cultural Center is proud to present RÊVERIE: Dreams of Harlem and Paris, featuring three founding members of the acclaimed Imani Winds.

This extraordinary musical experience celebrates the creativity and cultural influence of Black artists during the Harlem Renaissance and the vibrant jazz scene of early 20th-century Paris.

✨ Featuring Valerie Coleman, GRAMMY-nominated flutist, composer, educator, and Performance Today’s 2020 Classical Woman of the Year, alongside an exceptional ensemble of six artists.

Audiences will experience a captivating program featuring Coleman’s original compositions alongside timeless works by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and William Grant Still.

Step onto the 50-yard line for the New Hazlett’s first-ever co-production with DEMASKUS Theater Collective: Othello of the End Zone, or The Steel City Tragedy.

Written by Franky D. Gonzalez, directed by Shaunda Miles McDill, and starring Cynthia Dallas and Michael Patrick Trimm, this high-stakes modern reimagining brings Shakespeare to the Northside stage.

When Imani Othello is named Head Coach of America's most beloved football franchise, the pressure mounts on and off the field.

This hard-hitting adaptation centers a Black woman calling the plays at the height of her power, confronting ambition, betrayal, and relentless doubt.

SUNDAY RESET IS BACK‼️

This community wellness series will take place on select Sundays in October welcoming YOU into a third space to relax and refresh for the week ahead.

AWAACC has partnered with Black owned Yoga Studio to facilitate the session.

Registration is required.

OUR INSTRUCTOR:

Dominique Beckham is a certified yoga instructor and corporate wellness professional based in Pittsburgh.

Since 2024, she has been leading classes with a focus on stretch therapy, helping clients improve mobility, relieve tension, and reconnect with their bodies.

Dominique is passionate about creating welcoming spaces where participants can feel at ease, have fun, and fully engage.

Each class is thoughtfully paired with a curated playlist and intentional theme.

I regret to share the terrible news that Dr. Cathryn “CC” Calhoun, Director of Education has passed away suddenly today.

We, as a team, as a staff family, are devastated by the news. She was one of the hardest working, progressive, organized, visionary people I have known personally. She was always learning how to make more, to do more, to create opportunities for the community to express themselves and become better. Her contributions to our programming will carry on her legacy as an artist, educator, mentor, friend and colleague.

The Lights On Liberty-Give Light to the Whole Circumference art installation by Mikael Owunna and Marques Redd will shine in her honor tonight. The rainbow hues will represent the tremendous work she did with LGBTQ artists and organizations and stellar programming like Pride & Joy, which was her pride and joy.

We love you Dr. "CC". You are with the stars above now.

Legends.
Nancy D. Washington, Ph.D was a visionary. She, along with a group of committed, dedicated community leaders founded the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. Her passing is a shock and tremendous loss to the community and cultural landscape of the city, and the country. Her reach was national, and her influence crossed oceans. Her dream of a place where Black art and culture were heralded in Pittsburgh came to fruition with her time, talent and resources. We are forever grateful to her, her late husband Milton A. Washington, and their commitment to making the city of Pittsburgh a vibrant, equitable place for everyone for generations to come. The Nancy & Milton Washington Plaza, the Washington Family Orchestra at the Center are examples of their dedication for all to enjoy. We honored her on September 17, 2026 with the reveal of Phase I of the lighting installation on the Nancy & Milton Washington Plaza.
