The graceful Apollo and Daphne is one of my favorite of Bernini’s sculptures. It was inspired by a passage in Ovid’s Metamorphoses where a mischievous Cupid holds sway.

Apollo is struck by Cupid’s golden arrow. Overwhelmed by lust, he chases after Daphne. But Daphne’s simultaneously been struck by a lead arrow of disgust. She cries out to her father, a river god, for help. He transforms her into a laurel tree.

Bernini captures the moment of transformation, with the pair’s arms and legs moving in space and Daphne partially transformed into a tree. The details are so good that the sculpture seems real rather than merely mythological. Bernini turns hard cold marble into yielding flesh, fluttering leaves, and tangled tresses.

Newly renovated and cleaned, the sculpture is pristine. And its subject matter remains relevant — a ravenous man who won’t take no for an answer! 👇

Santa Maria Della Vittoria in Rome houses one of Bernini’s most dramatic and startling sculptures, the Ecstasy of St. Teresa, in the Cornaro Chapel.

It depicts the moment when an angel pierces Saint Teresa’s heart with the golden arrow of divine love. St. Teresa wasn’t your average saint. She was a Spanish nun who had full body mystical visions.

The risqué sculpture is a complex ensemble, Bernini stagecraft at the height of his maximalism ethos. The sculpture hovers above in an elevated niche.

St. Teresa is on a cloud with golden rays of light pouring down on the moment of intense emotion. On the walls of the chapel, members of the Cornaro family gather in “theater boxes” to witness the divine moment.

In 1658, Gian Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to build the third Jesuit church in Rome, Sant'Andrea al Quirinale.

As some may know, Bernini wasn't just a sculptor. He was also an architect. Many consider Sant'Andrea to be his architectural masterpiece.

This tiny church in Rome was once known as the “Pearl of the Baroque.” Bernini dressed the convex and concave forms in polychrome marble, gilded stucco, plaster statues, and dramatic paintings.

The result is an over-the-top example of Baroque architecture. Pure theater!

The Biblioteca Angelica, behind Piazza Navona in Rome, is one of the Europe’s most historic and visually striking libraries.

Founded in 1604 by Angelo Rocca, it is the oldest public library in Italy and one of the first in Europe. The library’s design reflects its Renaissance and Baroque heritage.

The highlight is the grand reading room. This space is lined with towering, dark wooden bookcases that stretch from the floor to the ceiling.

These shelves hold over 200,000 volumes, including priceless manuscripts, rare editions, and early printed books.

One of the library’s treasures is its collection of rare manuscripts, including works by Saint Augustine and the first printed editions of The Divine Comedy.

For one of the best views in Rome, head to the Pincio Terrace. It’s on the Pincian Hill that abuts the Borghese Gallery.

From the terrace, you’re treated to sweeping views of Piazza del Popolo, the dome-filled skyline of Rome. And, at sunset, a golden glow casts a magical light over the Eternal City.

The Beatrice Cenci Palace, or Palazzo Cenci, is a Renaissance palace in Rome with a fascinating and tragic backstory that adds an air of romance (with a capital R) tinged with melancholy.

Located in the Jewish Ghetto, the palace is associated with one of Rome’s most infamous figures, Beatrice Cenci. Her life story has inspired countless works of art, literature, and legend.

Beatrice was the daughter of a Roman aristocrat with a mean temper. Beatrice and her family ended up bludgeoning him to death.

They tried to get away with murder, but to no avail. The entire family was convicted of witchcraft and murder, and executed in 1599.

Legend holds that on the eve of her death, Beatrice returns to the Castel Sant’Angelo bridge — where the beheading took place — holding her severed head.

The Romans like to view her as a heroine who fought against injustice. Her courage and beauty have made her a symbol of doomed love.

The palace isn’t open to the public. But you should stroll by and soak up the romantic vibes. There’s also a beautiful portrait of Beatrice by Guido Reni in the Palazzo Barberini.

Mamertime Prison, or Carcer Mamertinus, is one of the oldest and most historically significant prisons in Rome, dating back to the 7th century BC. Located near the Roman Forum, it is famously associated with early Christian martyrs, including Saint Peter and Saint Paul, who were believed to have been imprisoned here. The prison consists of two small, dark chambers that were once used to detain high-profile prisoners. Today, Mamertime Prison is a popular historical site, offering visitors a glimpse into Rome's ancient past and the early days of Christianity.

You might blink and miss it. It’s just a solitary column in the middle of the Roman Forum.

The Column of Phocas was the last monument to be erected in the Roman Forum. It’s a triumphal column in honor of Phocas, a 7th century Byzantine emperor who ruled Rome from the east.

The column was supposed to represent a unified Rome, a new dawn for the Roman world. But that was a delusion. Rome was on its way out.

And so was Phocas. He murdered his predecessor to usurp the throne in 602. Two years after this column was erected, he met his own grim fate.

In essence, this column symbolizes the last breath of the western Roman Empire. https://www.thegeographicalcure.com/post/column-of-phocas
