We are heartbroken to learn that Yayoi Kusama has died at the age of 97.

In 1996, Kusama created many works at Mattress Factory and two works remain: "Repetitive Vision" and "Infinity Dots Mirrored Room." Thirty years later, they are still among the first things people ask about when they walk through our doors.

"I was twelve years old when I first stepped into those rooms, and they were among the first works of installation art I ever encountered," said Executive Director David Oresick. "They formed what I understood art could be. I did not have language for it at the time, I just knew I had never felt anything like it. Yayoi Kusama was brilliant, completely original, and the definition of a visionary. We are tremendously saddened by her passing, and endlessly grateful that she shared her work with this museum and with this city for so long."

This past Friday, exhibiting artist Amanda Ross-Ho performed "Untitled Demolition (HYPHEN)" the first in a series of performances that will will take place at Mattress Factory through the duration of her site-specific installation, "Untitled Second Floor (ONE BIG DARK ROOM)."

Using endurance and power tools, Ross-Ho enacts an extreme modification to the architecture of the installation, repeatedly demolishing and rebuilding the wall between the front two bedrooms of the house, her parent's bedroom. The debris from the demolition will accumulate over time, like a recording. Ross-Ho sees the opening and closing of this space like a camera shutter, capturing a new image with every opening.

Keep an eye on the calendar at mattress.org/calendar to get tickets early once the next performance link goes live!

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Benôit Maubrey + Hans Peter Kuhn | Audio Jackets (1986)

Seven ordinary people walked through busy parts of downtown Pittsburgh, Oakland, and Shadyside, dressed in ordinary, but identical, denim pants and jackets and white painters' caps. Nonchalant, they moved in a group or alone, waiting for buses, reading newspapers, and window shopping. In their wake was laughter. Bees buzzing. Telephones ringing. Loud hammering. Unintelligible words in another language. Commotion. Coming from them, in unison, broadcast from circular speakers hidden under their jackets, attached to concealed tape players.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Benoît Maubrey (b. 1952, Washington, DC) is the director and founder of DIE AUDIO GRUPPE a Berlin-based art group that build and perform with electronic clothes. In his non-mobile sculptural work he frequently uses former public (disguarded) monuments and recycles them using modern technology and electronics. Since 1982 he has been conceiving and creating interactive sculptures in public spaces.

Artist and composer Hans Peter Kuhn (b. 1952, Germany) was born in Kiel (DE), lives and works in Berlin (DE) and Amino/Kyoto (JP). In 1975 he started his professional career at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer in Berlin (now Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz).

After Kuhn left the Schaubühne in 1979, he concentrated on his own artistic work and created since then a huge body of work. He mainly created sound- and light installations, radioplays, composed film music, and music and environments for theatre and dance.

The most prestigious award was the “Golden Lion” of the Venice Biennale 1993 that was given to Robert Wilson and Kuhn for the installation “Memory/Loss”. Since 2012 he is a guest professor at the the master class Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the Universität der Künste (University of the Arts) in Berlin (DE).

Lo Bar Cocktail Services has worked with Mattress Factory since the luxury private bar service launched in 2018. Citing the museum's annual Garden Party as an opportunity for them to showcase their creativity in collaboration with each year's themes, co-owner Lisa Considine says the event is a highlight of their year.

"The museum and the Winnifred Lutz 'Garden' make a magical backdrop for some of our favorite couples, and we feel so lucky to be able to be a part of these memorable celebrations."
