For decades, q***r artists have realized their bold visions, transformative ideas, and expansive installations at Mattress Factory. Their impact can be felt not only in the museum, but throughout Pittsburgh's arts community and across the world of contemporary art.

This spring, Mattress Factory had the honor of working with Argentine artist duo Lolo y Lauti on "Triple Threat," an exhibition inspired by American musical theatre that celebrates the stage as a place of comfort and expression for q***r identity.

We celebrate Pride in June, and we carry the pride in Mattress Factory's alumni artists throughout the year, every year. Thank you for empowering us to build with you.

Mattress Factory has taken Manhattan for NADA, where the museum’s Artistic Director Anthony Elms curated a presentation of five artist-focused spaces from around the US. Anthony led a circle of museum supporters across the island to discover what can be accomplished when creatives focus on building together, for each other.

We were moved by Jenny Jaskey's projects at the American Academy of Arts & Letters, mesmerized by Anthony Huberman at Giorno Poetry Systems, and filled with a shared sense of purpose (and paella) over dinner at the Hotel Chelsea.

If you're interested in being a part of Mattress Factory's next travel program, a great way to start is by joining our membership here: https://mattress.org/mattress-factory-museum-membership/

If you've ever wondered what it takes to bring an exhibition at Mattress Factory from a blank canvas to opening-ready, check out this before and after comparison of 516 Sampsonia in various stages of the install process.

For the installation of Claudia Martínez Garay + Arturo Kameya's "La ceniza ya no recuerda qué causó el incendio. / The ash no longer remembers what caused the fire.," several rooms involved specialized prep work, including the creation of curved wooden walls. The artists worked alongside the museum's exhibitions staff and several contractors to ensure the environments set the desired stage for their artwork. From painted rooms to programmed mechatronics to carefully placed miniatures, the artists made and directed thousands of decisions in order to execute their vision.

This exhibition was created in partnership with the Carnegie Museum of Art for the 59th Carnegie International.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
Kendall Buster | “Untitled” (1985)

Simple architectural forms in two and three dimensions evoke the midnight eeriness of the deserted urban landscape. You find walls that unexpectedly block your way, ramps leading nowhere, doors that don't open, dim red lights, the silhouette of an anonymous figure watching through an overhead grating. A hotly glowing red panel feeds your sense of paranoia.

The 1985 installation at the Mattress Factory explored a territory between the sculptural and the architectural. Through a combination of reductive and eccentric geometric structures, radical manipulations in scale, and diverse lighting techniques, the environment produced a theatrical aura. Considered an analytic re/de-constriction of architectonic space (and the "everyday" social edifice), the project demanded physical interaction from the viewer. Sculptural objects posed as intrinsic design components, catalyzing an interplay of illusionistic effects.

Kendall Buster (b. 1954, Selma, Alabama) earned a BFA degree from the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington DC and an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University as well as participating in the Whitney Museum’s Independent Study Studio Program in New York City.
Her work has been exhibited in venues nationally and internationally including the Hirshhorn Museum and the Kreeger Museum in Washington, DC, Artist’s Space and the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, Suyama Space in Seattle, Washington, the Bahnhof Westend in Berlin, and the KZNSA Gallery in Durban, South Africa.

Buster currently lives and works in Richmond, Virginia and is a Professor in the Department of Sculpture and Extended Media at Virginia Commonwealth University.
