"One day, I was looking at a tablecloth covered in red flowers, which was spread out on the table. Then I looked up toward the ceiling. There, on the windows and even on the pillars, I saw the same red flowers. They were all over the room, my body, and the entire universe." – Yayoi Kusama

🟡 Kusama uses mirrors as a medium to obliterate boundaries—dissolving herself, others, and surroundings into a shimmering realm of infinity. Through this, she conjures a sense of nothingness and otherworldly immersion. 🔵

🟢 One of the world's most successful living artists, Kusama has explored painting, sculpture, performance, and installation in her career spanning back to the 1950's. Her lifelong struggle with mental illness and ideas of “normalcy” shape her work; work that is filled with obsessive patterns and anthropomorphic forms that reflect her inner world. 🔴

As the 4th floor in 500 Sampsonia was recently transformed by Marc Vilanova and our exhibitions staff to open "Grounded Frictions," we're highlighting a work that previously occupied the space over 20 years ago: Ann Reichlin’s 2003 installation, "Schism."

Reichlin transformed the space on the 4th floor into narrow passageways and enclosed rooms out of rebar, steel lath, and wire fabric. The tilted and transparent walls along with filtered daylight—passing through perforated plastic covering the windows—fragment and stratify the space, in spite of the fact that viewers can look through the walls themselves.

Ann Reichlin’s artworks fill rooms; she describes her installations as abstracted self-portraits. Examining rooms and architecture as not only physical but psychological constructions, Reichlin invites observers to explore how each plane intersects, emerges, and disappears from view. These spaces, rather than inviting and accommodating human inhabitation, seemingly exist at their own will.

Ann Reichlin’s other installations challenge space—both indoor and outdoor, manufactured and natural—to set the terms by which their inhabitants must abide, rather than the other way around.

One of her most recent large-scale installations, "Transient Room" (2021), occupied an abandoned cell in Philadelphia’s Eastern State Penitentiary. Using wood and mirrorlite to reflect the cell’s ceiling back at itself, Reichlin creates a new, imaginary room out of a space she considers “restrictive, cruel, and hauntingly beautiful.” Reichlin’s portfolio, resume, and social media can be found on her website: annereichlin.com.
