A special friend came to visit and this piece evolved over conversations and memories.
The title of this piece is “Always Happy”. Just like this person. We can make decisions about where life takes us. We can be sad about the darkness we face and we can fall into our sorrows, or we can look to the light and embrace the love that surrounds us.
I admire my friend who is Always Happy. Who feels fortunate for the small things. Who embraces kindness, friendship, and loves life. This friend is a human smile and he brings joy to those who know him. I am lucky to call him my friend.
If you know Dickenson, you know this to be true.

“Splendor”. I created this as a triptych. Each time I look at it I see something I hadn’t previously seen.
Watercolor on paper. Layers of color merging, creating tertiary blends. Some of my favorite pieces are quick, and sloppy and leave the most beautiful colors to chance.

Paper Pregnancy
By InterArtist Jen Haefeli, 2023
Adorned with dossiers for three of Haiti’s jewels, and finished with the powerful signature of approval of the process, each torn and lightly tacked tendril represents a month in the process of advocating for my children. Each color is symbolic of need, loss, survival, threat, and beauty. A mother must be strong but delicate when building a relationship with an emotionally traumatized child. Some do not let love in. The work merely begins when the process is finalized. The duality of poured paint on paper that has seen many days, folds, and flights represents sorrow, tears, and flooding rains that rip apart the earth as it rushes down upon ill-fortified, nutrient-lacking soil of over-forested land, it weeps. Witnessing it evokes empathy for the suffering of deeply wounded women who watch their children leave their mother country. The island is suffering. Its future is crumbling. Haiti’s children are leaving.
This is what it looks like in my creative space. What does yours look like?
