My piece, Chwa, pronounced “Sh-wah”, which means “Choice” in Haitian Kreyol, is part of the Women’s Caucus for Art’s Art Activism Pod’s “ART-RAGE: A Creative Rebellion.” This powerful exhibit of work for the Fall for Freedom’s national call for creative resistance, was created to counter fascist repression and censorship with defiant creativity.

The work will be available to view between October 2 - November 30, 2026.
90 artists. 90 voices. One creative rebellion.

Leading Lady Marguerite Carlough was known as a ‘Radium Girl.’ Marguerite became the first and the youngest of the dial painters to sue a radium firm. Her lawsuit inspired the group of five women who went on to settle their historic and unprecedented lawsuit against the U.S. Radium Dial Corporation in1928. Marguerite, like her sister, Sarah Carlough Maillefer, lost her life to radium poisoning. However, she saved countless lives by demanding how dial painters applied paint.

Learn how Marguerite’s bravery ended the practice of ‘lip pointing.’ The artwork created for Marguerite's paper doll is my artistic interpretation of her likeness based on the sources available to me. The Leading Ladies Radium Girls series is a capsule collection created to honor the many women who lost their lives and health to radium. Leading Lady Sarah Carlough Maillefer, was known as a 'Radium Girl'. Sarah worked as a dial painter with her sister at the United States Radium Dial Corporation located in Orange, New Jersey. Sarah worked for U.S. Radium Dial until her sister Marguerite filed a lawsuit against the corporation. Sarah was the first dial painter tested for radium poisoning, and the first dial painter autopsied to confirm that her death was caused by radium poisoning due to exposure while working as a dial painter for the corporation. Learn how Sarah’s case is different, and about the unprecedented scientific breakthroughs and findings in her case.

Leading Lady Quinta ’May' Maggia McDonald is considered to be a 'Radium Girl'. She was an American dial painter with the United States Radium Dial Corporation located in Orange, New Jersey. She was one of the five women who sued Radium Dial after she experienced radium poisoning. Quinta's sister, Mollie Maggia, was the first known woman to die of radium poisoning. Three of the Maggia sisters worked for the company, and all three became victims of radium poisoning.

Leading Lady Amelia Malia ‘Mollie’ Maggia was an American Radium Dial painter who worked for the U.S. Radium Dial Company located in Orange, New Jersey. Mollie became the first Radium Dial painter to pass away from radium poisoning. Mollie’s dentist, Dr.. Knef, knew that U.S. Radium had provided Mollie with a false diagnosis. He continued to advocate for Mollie, and other dial painters who sought his help, and with his continued assistance, Mollie’s family received the confirmation several years after her passing that she was poisoned by the paint she worked with.

Many dial painters like Mollie have come to be known as Radium Girls. Learn about Mollie and the other dial painters. Collect each paper doll in the Leading Ladies Radium Girls series.

Leading Lady Margaret Ethel “Peg” Looney is considered to be a “Radium Girl”. Peg worked for the Radium Dial Company located in Ottawa, Illinois, and was involved in a lawsuit filed against the company. Sadly, she passed away before the successful conclusion of the case. The dial painters received an unprecedented state-sanctioned financial compensation.

Many dial painters like Peg did not live long enough to see the passing of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration Act in 1971. However, their advocacy lead to the law being passed. OSHA has become a fundamental law that workers rely on in the United States. Learn about Peg and the other dial painters by collecting each paper doll in the Leading Ladies Radium Girls series. The artwork created for Peg’s paper doll is my artistic interpretation of her likeness based on the sources available to me.
