Read Tara Fay Coleman’s thoughtful review, The Archive as Liberation Allows for Unresolved Truths, just published in Petrichor! petrichorpittsburgh.com/2025/04/23/silver-eye-archive/

Coleman reflects on our recent exhibition The Archive as Liberation, co-curated with Aaron R. Turner, and how artists Andre Bradley, calista lyon, Raymond Thompson Jr., Harrison D. Walker, and Savannah Wood are reshaping the archive into a living, communal practice.

“Each artist here engages the archive not as a static repository, but as a living, shifting terrain where absence speaks as loudly as presence. There’s something especially powerful about seeing Black and Indigenous artists use the archive in this way. It’s stretched, re-written, and questions what has been recorded and what’s been deliberately omitted.”

Thank you to Tara Fay Coleman and Petrichor for this thoughtful and powerful review of The Archive as Liberation—and to everyone who engaged with the exhibition or joined us for the accompanying programming, thank you!

The Archive as Liberation is on exhibit through April 19!

These are the final days to experience work by Andre Bradley, calista lyon, Raymond Thompson Jr., Harrison D. Walker, and Savannah Wood—each offering diverse perspectives on how archives can reshape understandings of the past and empower how we envision the future.

Savannah Wood is our final artist highlight. Wood is an artist with deep roots in Baltimore and Los Angeles, using photography, text, and installation to explore how spirituality, domesticity, and relationships to place shape identities. Her multimedia project Hard to Get and Dear Paid For examines the life and legacy of Enoch George Howard, an enslaved man born in 1814 near Unity, Maryland. In his lifetime, Howard came to own the land where he and his family were held captive, including a parcel called Hard to Get and Dear Paid For. After his death, his daughter Martha used proceeds from his estate to invest in her husband’s business, the influential Afro-American Newspaper. As the Executive Director of Afro Charities, Wood works to increase access to the 130+-year-old AFRO-American Newspapers’ extensive archives. Like four generations of ancestors before her, she lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, sharing and preserving Black stories.

Andre Bradley is based in Philadelphia and utilizes photography, installation, and experimental lectures as forms of ideological resistance that foreground lived experiences of Blackness against the background of art.

“Thank you so much for visiting The Archive as Liberation at Silver Eye. In my work, Where's Walter? (Gentle on my Mind), I asked a viewer to play a game. In appearing images, I created a digital cutout of Walter Scott, that runs, quote unquote. Walter runs outside the local news frame where we usually encounter his and others’ experiences. In the piece, the figure is cut from its history and collaged into an image text treatment of the classic children's book Where's Waldo, creating an impression of the public haunt of unarmed black women and men killed by police. Images culled from our public archives are set to a soundtrack of songs by NWA (100 Miles and Running), Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin, respectfully, gentle on my mind. Enjoy.”

As The Archive as Liberation continues, we’re excited to share in more detail about each artist’s practice in the coming weeks.

Harrison D. Walker is an artist in the Greater Boston area and the Manager of Studio Operations for the Digital Imaging and Visual Resources Department at Harvard Art Museums.

“Footnotes is a living archive of prints based on documents and images which explore the unknown, the edge of civilization and the frontier, using the v2 rocket as a vessel for investigation. Driven by interests and the intersections of the printed object, the archive, chemistry, astronomy, and chance, much of the content and footnotes is appropriated or inspired by things found in public and personal archives. What secrets lie beyond the horizon or in the dark expanses of deep space? What do those secrets look like? What do they reveal about the universe, about us? Footnotes is meant to lead us further into the unknown by exploring the ideas and technologies foundational to space exploration.”

Dear friends,

Art starts conversations and we are proud to support emerging artists who bring a breadth of personal experiences and critical imagination to urgent questions that so many of us share. Art is also a focus of celebration, and we are honored that so many have found in Silver Eye a place to come together around photography, ideas, fellowship, and shared experiences of exploration, reflection, and connection.

Your gift to Silver Eye

+ enables us to give financial, material, and curatorial support to emerging artists, as they share their work with the public. Artists gain both experience and exposure through exhibiting at Silver Eye.

+ makes powerful art asking important questions accessible in our communities.

+ keeps gallery and community programs free to the public, providing a space for all to explore vital ideas in photography, hold direct conversation with artists, and to experiment creatively at The Lab @ Silver Eye.

Your contribution enables artists and communities to imagine new futures through photography.

We are grateful to Arts, Equity, and Education Fund, which has pledged a $5000 match of individual donations to Silver Eye! Help us unlock this match today!
