Pipestone County Historical Society The Museum was opened in 1967.

First organized in 1880 with a mission to discover, preserve and disseminiate knowledge about Pipestone County's history, PCHS is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation located in the heart of historic downtown Pipestone.

In the Collection: United States War Ration Book One. Sugar sales were halted by the government at the end of April 1942. Ration Book One, also known as the Sugar Book, was issued in early May and was originally intended only for sugar. The book with 28 stamps allotted 26 pounds of sugar per person per year, half of the per-capita use in 1941. Stamps numbered 19 through 28 were later designated for coffee when it began to be rationed in November 1942.

On Exhibit Now: Panama Hat. A stamp inside this hat reads "Air Flow Genuine Panama." For a hat to be a genuine Panama, it must be made in Ecuador with toquilla straw from the native toquilla palm plant. The Panama hat gained popularity in the 1920s due to its durability and relative lightness. This hat belonged to Dr. Alexander Brown of Pipestone.

Today's Tidbit: "This 1942 Case tractor has been spruced up as part of a project in the Farm Machinery class at Pipestone High School. The tractor, owned by sophomore Lyman Paulsen, was "rusted out" according to Lyman, when it was brought to class about 4 weeks ago, but has received a complete sandblasting and facelift by the students. Lyman's grandfather bought the tractor new in 1942. Students in the class said one of the things they learn in the class is how to take care of machinery. "Machinery costs so much money," instructor Lonnie Boese said, "they have to learn how to take care of their equipment and money." He estimated the tractor was worth about $400 when it was brought in and now appears to be worth in excess of $1,000. Lyman plans to store the tractor. "I have always wanted to have an antique tractor," he said.

In the Collection: Pipestone County Auditor and Minnesota Tax Commission Correspondence. Pipestone County Auditor Tad Bailey sent a letter to the Minnesota Tax Commission on March 20, 1923, regarding the assessment of a man living in the Rock County part of Jasper. He was assessed by Pipestone County and not Rock County. Bailey wanted to know if Pipestone County could collect the tax and give it to Rock County. Read the second letter or check the comments to see the Minnesota Tax Commission's official response.

On Exhibit Now: Krispy Crackers Sunshine Biscuits Tin. The Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company was founded in 1902. They adopted the name Sunshine for their products and made cookies, crackers, and cereals. They operated until being purchased by Keebler Company in 1996, which was in turn purchased by the Kellogg Company in 2001.

Today's Tidbit: "Thursday's cloudburst dumped 3 inches of rain on Pipestone, flooding city streets and stopping planting-minded farmers in their tracks. This photograph was taken about 8 p.m. near the city's public works barn. The underpass on Hwy 30 was also flooded, causing cars to take alternate routes." PIPESTONE COUNTY STAR; May 15, 1986.

In the Collection: This program is from the Cazenovia community production of "The Path Across The Hill." The comedy-drama three-act play by Lillian Mortimer was presented at Troy Hall at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, April 26, 1929. The Pipestone Leader reported that the play put on by the Cazenovia young people drew a large crowd.
