Pipestone County Historical Society The Museum was opened in 1967.

Today's Tidbit: "Gum in the pencil holder, "Greg L." scratched into the surface of the wood, this desk at Central School has been retired after getting its share of abuse from countless pupils who have sat in it. Familiar scenes like desktops covered in graffitti will be returning next week as Pipestone's schools open their doors to another year of reading, writing, and arithmetic." In the Collection: Pipestone County Auditor and Minnesota Tax Commission Correspondence. Pipestone County Auditor August C. Kallsen sent a letter to the Minnesota Tax Commission on July 16, 1937, regarding the homestead exemption. The question was whether a farm owned jointly by two parties, where only one of the partners lived on the farm, should receive the full homestead exemption up to $4,000 or only half. Read the second letter or check the comments to see the Minnesota Tax Commission's official response.

Today's Tidbit: "A long summer layoff means a chance that athletes may slip into poor condition. Therefore, early practice sessions concentrate on drills to build stamina and improve the player's overall shape. Though the varsity started practice last Monday, the ninth graders will wait until this Monday before beginning their workouts. This first ninth grade practice will be at 3:30 Monday." In the Collection: This meat or carving fork reads "We Appreciate Your Trade J.A. Benz, Pipestone, Minn." J.A. Benz bought the City Meat Market from George Colvin & George Tabler in 1924. Benz ran the business located at 105 North Hiawatha, Pipestone, until selling in 1940 to W.A. Schirmer & Earl Foster.

As the 250th Anniversary year of our nation continues, we invite you to join us at the Pipestone County Museum to learn more about the history of our nation's flag. We will also be hosting Anita Gual with a presentation on the subject October 1st. Anita will speak at the MS/HS that afternoon then doing a presentation for the public at 7:00 pm that evening at the Pipestone Performing Arts Center.

On Exhibit Now: These dishes were made to commemorate Pipestone's Centennial and America's Bicentennial. Available for sale at $3 a piece were plates, cup & saucer sets, steins, small coffee mugs, and large mugs. For a limited time in 1976, they could be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce, Museum, Pipestone National Bank, First National Bank, and Pipestone Federal Savings and Loan.

On this Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic Medal there is raised text around the center image that reads, “Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic 1886.” The bar across the top reads F.L.C. which stands for Fraternity, Loyalty, and Charity.

Researching and cataloging our civil war collection was summer intern Olyvia Webber's project this summer. Her concentration was on the archival portion of the collection, and her exhibit features objects as well. Come check out her exhibit at the Pipestone County Museum- she did a great job!
