91 years ago, on Saturday, July 25, 1936, the first Green River Rendezvous Pageant was held to
commemorate the 100th anniversary of Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spaulding attending the 1836
mountain man rendezvous in the Valley where Horse Creek Meets the Green River. Pictured here are scenes from the early Rendezvous Pageant at the original site in Daniel, Wyoming.
Spearheaded by Mary Scott at the request of historian Grace Hebard, the effort included a research trip to Portland to read the women’s diaries. The Sublette County Historical Society secured park land at the site of the original Rendezvous in Daniel, Wyoming by leasing it from Ralph Conwell and they dedicated a Monument to Narcissa Prentiss Whitman and Eliza Hart Spaulding “First White Women in Wyoming” which still stands.
The pageant committee consisted of Etta Hennick, Mary Scott, Angeline Feltner, Francis Clark, and Mae Mickelson. Attendees brought their own picnic lunches to enjoy before the show. The historical pageant “Life at the Rendezvous in 1836” featured Mim Barlow as Narcissa Whitman and Ida Faler as Eliza Spaulding, with support from the CCC for grounds preparation and a group of 100 “portrait Indians.” Costumes were rented from Salt Lake Costume Company. They sold 1,500 programs that day, and when rain rolled in, they just moved the big costume ball over to the Bronx Community Hall and kept the party going.
Now here we are in 2026 preparing for the 91st Annual Green River Rendezvous Pageant. We have updated the script and moved the production to Pinedale, but the spirit of the Rendezvous lives on! Join us this Sunday, July 12, 2026 for the 91st Annual Green River Rendezvous Pageant and watch history come alive! Also come see our cast in the Parade on Saturday at 10 am and join us for our Beard Shave Fundraiser on Sunday right after the Pageant at Stockman’s Saloon.
