Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society Our community's Historical Society Museum contains thousands of Pickerington-Violet Township historical artifacts.

Our Museum is open for monthly events which are advertised on this page. The Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society was organized in 1987. Our Museum is located in the former Carnegie Library which was built in 1916 with a $10,000 grant from Andrew Carnegie. Pickerington was one of the smallest communities in the United States to receive such a grant. When a new, larger library was constructed on Opportunity Way in 1993, the Library Board donated the Carnegie Library to the city of Pickerington with the stipulation that a museum be created and maintained. Since then, the Pickerington-Violet Township Historical Society has filled the main level of the former Carnegie Library with a collection of local historic artifacts and memorabilia including one of two original town pumps, household items, vintage music makers, business signage and equipment, photographs, cemetery records, and more. In addition, a reference section gives visitors an opportunity to research local written history, and a gift shop offers for sale souvenir note/postcards, prints, china, and historic books and documents. In addition to serving as our Historical Society's meeting room, our Museum's lower level showcases photographs of Pickerington-Violet Township high school graduating classes from 1909-1981. It also contains school furnishings, artifacts and photos from one-room schools in the 1800s to present day Pickerington Local School District grade and high schools.

The Christmas Tree Burning took place on Dec 31, 1965 as part of Pickerington's Sesquicentennial Celebration. We would like to verify if it was held in Victory Park or on the corner where Circle K is now located at Columbus St & Hill Rd. Does anyone around in 1965 remember?

Per the Pickerington Sun Times - At Christmas time, Pickerington villagers were encouraged to flip on their holiday lights simultaneously on December 10 for "Illumination Night". The blurb does not mention the time but does state that the displays would be judged and winners would receive "handsome prizes".

After Christmas, Boy Scouts would gather everyone's discarded trees and sack them in Victory Park for a New Year's Eve bonfire. The volunteers at the Violet Township Fire Department supervised the festivities.

Does anyone remember this?

In "Sing a Song of Sixpence", how many blackbirds were baked into a pie? The image below is from Randolph Caldecott's 1880 illustrated version of the nursery rhyme.

In the Middle Ages, chefs would produce works of culinary art to serve between courses at banquets. These edible displays, called "entremet" (meaning "between servings") were accompanied by performers.

Another version of this between-course entertainment arose in which the presented dish was revealed to be a joke and not actually meant for consumption. The English called this "subtlety".
