Happy Birthday Lizzie! Although her actual birthday is today, June 1, we partied it up all weekend with our 1926 Model T chief's car from Washington state; first we joined her for the fabulous pancake breakfast at Daisy Mountain Station 142 Saturday morning in Anthem, then she was back at the Hall of Flame by that afternoon for cake! 1904 "Metropolitan" Steam Engine

"Steamers" came into wide use in American cities from about 1855 until 1915. This one was built in the Ahrens-Fox shops by the American Fire Engine Company for the city of Reno, Nevada.

A large engine for its time, it could pump 750 gpm. It was drawn by three horses and staffed by three firefighters. The rest of the engines crew responded separately on a hose wagon.

This beautiful apparatus is currently on display in Gallery 1.

In past times these different types of fire hydrants stood in place on select street corners, on private property, or at commercial buildings/complexes. Their purpose....to supply the much needed water for fire suppression, providing a lifeline to firefighters.

We have hundreds of these on display throughout our collection. They are fire history as well as a form of art.

Come by and see these and many more exciting and wonderful exhibits here at the Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting.

1897/1915 Christie-Champion Water Tower

This Water Tower was built in 1897 for the Toledo, Ohio Fire Department. It is a historical development of fire apparatus, as it represents the transition to motorized rigs. This Water Tower was originally horse drawn with a team of three horses pulling it in the opposite direction that it now goes in. By 1915, it was converted to gasoline power, with the installation of the Christie Tractor. This attachment features a transverse mounted engine, with chain driven front wheel drive.

Here's another amazing aspect to this rig....it stayed in front line service until 1950.

Hope everybody had a safe and happy Memorial Day! The Hall of Flame Museum of Firefighting was honored to participate in this year's observances at the Heard Museum today, which included musical performances at the American Indian Veterans National Memorial. It was also a storytelling event, and along with the moving and entertaining personal stories, we got to share "No Dragons for Tea," one of our favorite fire safety stories.

This model was introduced by Mack in 1950. It was extremely popular with volunteer departments. This rig has a 180 hp gasoline engine, which was able to achieve 60 mph, and it has a 500 gpm pump.
