The City of Phoenix is following CDC guidelines, effective August 2, 2021, a mask or face covering will be required when inside a city facility, regardless of vaccination status. The Museum galleries and buildings including restrooms will be open at 75% capacity as of July 20, 2021.

Welcome back to our Object of the Month highlight series!

This half pint milk bottle was excavated from the remnants of a historic neighborhood trash pile in Phoenix. The bottle likely dates to 1929-1935, during the Great Depression. Although many were struggling financially, Phoenix residents still purchased milk from local creameries. The saguaro label and faint script reading “Borden’s” indicate that this bottle held milk from Borden’s Creamery, which once stood in Downtown Phoenix.

Here is another look behind the scenes! As our Collections staff deinstall pieces from the Parched exhibit, they are transported to the Collections lab to conduct thorough inspections. These inspections allow our staff to complete condition reports, which provide information about whether the pieces experienced any damage or alteration while on display. Condition reports also allow us to inform other institutions of the proper methods to care for and protect different materials.

The main concern for a mixed media piece like 𝘠𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘸𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯, by Glory Tacheenie-Campoy, is the potential for insects that consume fibrous materials like cloth and paper. Thankfully, this piece passed inspection with flying colors!

The chef lineup for our inaugural Harmony Gala drew heavily on Arizona’s nationally recognized culinary talent, including a culinary team from our Cuisine Sponsor, Desert Diamond Casino’s signature dining program of the Tohono O’odham Nation. Led by Executive Chef Belal Rajab, with a cross-cultural and familial approach, this Culinary team offered Sonoran and O’odham‑inspired flavors in approachable contemporary menus. We thank Desert Diamond’s culinary team for supporting the Harmony Gala.
