Lenten Fridays call for something light, quick & easy for dinner...and this Branzino Oreganata definitely fits the bill.😋
⠀
I've always loved anything "oreganata" - it's a popular Italian-American method of preparing fish & shellfish that’s topped off w/a seasoned breadcrumb mixture & often includes parm, parsley, olive oil, garlic & lemon (&, sometimes, butter & peperoncino).⠀

My version here was developed specifically to complement the sweet flavor & buttery texture of beautiful branzino filets—it has tons of savoriness from garlic butter, olives, dried tomatoes, green onions & lemon. And, I loved this mixture so much that I put it on some shrimp I had as well!

Buon Appetito!
::
::
BRANZINO OREGANATA
Serves 6
::
1c plain breadcrumbs (4oz)⠀
1c garlic butter, room temp (or 2/3c regular butter) (you can just mix Garlic Confit & butter together-message me if you need the confit recipe)
3/4c sun-dried tomatoes, chopped (without oil)
1/2c green onions, chopped (about 1oz)
1/2c oil-cured olives, chopped⠀
1 Tbsp evoo
zest from 1 lemon (about 1 Tbsp)
::
Make breadcrumb topping by mixing together all above ingredients until well-combined. Set aside.
::
::
6 branzino filets
::
Preheat oven to 375F.⠀
Sprinkle filets w/s&p, then place skin side down on parchment-lined sheet pan.⠀
Cover each filet thoroughly w/breadcrumb mixture, top w/lemon slices & roast for 12 min. Finish under broiler for 2 min; serve & enjoy!

When Friday the 13th comes around in the Western world, people start talking about the possibilities of unfortunate things happening. While the superstition runs deep in many countries, including the United States, Finland, and the Philippines, you won’t find anyone in Italy stressing out on the 13th. In fact, the number 13 is considered good luck in Italy. That’s because in Italian culture, the number 17—not 13—is considered unlucky, and when it comes to Friday the 17th, some would even call it “un giorno nero" (a black day).

On March 14, 1891, a vigilante mob in shot and lynched 11 innocent Italian Americans for their alleged role in the murder of city police chief David Hennessy after some of them had been acquitted at trial.

It was one of the largest single mass lynchings in American history.

On this Anniversary of this darkest chapter in history, let us remember those who lost their lives that day.

Antonio Bagnetto, fruit peddler: Tried and acquitted.
James Caruso, stevedore: Not tried.
Loreto Comitis, tinsmith: Not tried.
Rocco Geraci, stevedore: Not tried.
Joseph Macheca, fruit importer and Democratic Party political boss: Tried and acquitted.
Antonio Marchesi, fruit peddler: Tried and acquitted.
Pietro Monasterio, cobbler: Mistrial.
Emmanuele Polizzi, street vendor: Mistrial.
Frank Romero, ward politician: Not tried.
Antonio Scaffidi, fruit peddler: Mistrial.
Charles Traina, rice plantation laborer: Not tried.

Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.

Congratulations to Team Italy for their victory in the over the Netherlands 7-1 to advance to the next round of the ! While the Netherlands struck first in what was a do-or-die game for both teams, Italy exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and would never look back from there.

With the win, Italy, headed by former MLB catcher Mike Piazza, advances to the Quarterfinals since their miraculous run in 2013. Congratulations again to the Italian team for their fortitude, pressing on even as the pressure mounted on them early in the classic! IABF - Italian American Baseball Foundation

Reposted from The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF):

Happy Women’s History Month! Today we are highlighting Dr. Maria Montessori.

Dr. Maria Montessori went against imposed gender limitations of the time and became the first female doctor in Italy. Born in 1870, in Chiaravalle (province of Ancona), Italy, Montessori attend classes at an all boy’s technical institute when she was 14. Against her father’s will, Montessori then graduated with high honors from the University of Rome’s medical school in 1896, and became Italy’s first female physician. She focused on pediatrics and psychiatry, pioneering theories in early childhood education. In 1907, the Italian government put Montessori in charge of Casa dei Bambini, a school of 60 students, ranging in age from 1 to 6, from lower income areas.

By 1925, more than 1,000 of Montessori's schools were opened in America, but by 1940 only a few of these schools remained. During the 1960s, Montessori’s schools experienced a revival and today, many schools around the world operate under the Montessori educational approach. The teaching method is characterized by an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical and social development. At the start of World War II, Montessori went to India, where she developed a program called Education for Peace, earning her two Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

NIAF funds the Research Lectureship in Education, a grant that aims to support an Italian elementary/middle school teacher or university lecturer/researcher with research interests in early childhood education that involve the Montessori Method. The grant is in partnership with The Fulbright Program and Georgetown University. Learn more: https://buff.ly/3IAF9yC.

"Today's highlighted FESTA PATRONALE goes down to the south of Italy to Puglia. BUONA FESTA DI MARIA SANTISSIMA DI CONSTANTINAPOLI, PATRONA DI BITRITTO, BARI, PUGLIA. Happy Our Lady of Constantinople Day.
This title is a popular one throughout the south of Italy and while today is the Church's designated feast day, each town has different days for their main celebration. In Bitritto near Bari, in Puglia this feast of their patron saint is held the first tuesday of March.
In Chicago, Il. there's a sizeable community of people from Bitritto and they celebrate their feast day with a mass and banquet every year, along with other events like a summer picnic. AUGURI AI TUTTI I BITRITTESI!!!"

Opening in the Sala Dorica of Naples’ Palazzo Reale on July 20th of this year is a national museum dedicated to the life of Enrico Caruso, the legendary tenor behind “‘O Sole Mio.”
The Museum will be opening on the 150th Anniversary of his birth, a man that Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano called a “sublime example of Italian genius.” It will display various objects from throughout Caruso's life and career, including the costume worn for his iconic role as Canio in Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.
Be sure to visit the museum to honor one of the most legendary Italian figures in the history of the music industry!

From Villanova University:
Please join us on Wednesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in Falvey Library’s Speakers’ Corner for the 2022-2023 Alfred F. Mannella and Rose T. Lauria-Mannella Endowed Distinguished Speaker Series Lecture featuring Peter Spina. Spina’s talk is titled, “The Italian Heritage of American Popular Music.”
The rich musical heritage that Italian immigrants brought with them at the turn of the last century has had a major impact on shaping United States culture. From the birth of the nation’s commercial music industry in the early 1900’s through its evolution into American post-World War II pop, Italians had an outsized role and impact. Join us as Mr. Spina delves into how this occurred and discusses some of the key artists that led the way, particularly those from the Philadelphia Italian-American community.
