06/14/2023

Today, we honor and salute the symbol of America and the freedoms we enjoy. Below you will find interesting information about our symbol of Freedom. Fly your flags high and be proud of this day!

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution, stating β€œthe flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.”

More than 130 years later, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed June 14, 1916 as Flag Day. As did President Calvin Coolidge in 1927. It was officially declared a national holiday in 1949 when it was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Harry Truman. Although it is not a federal holiday, Flag Day is celebrated annually across the country. In honor of the red, white and blue, here are some facts about the stars and stripes you may not have known.

June 14 is Flag Day, an annual observance of the Second Continental Congress' official adoption of the stars and stripes in 1777. At the time, they "resolved that the flag of the 13 United States" be represented by 13 alternating red and white stripes and the union by 13 white stars in a blue field.

Flag Day is not a federal holiday but is observed all across the country. The holiday was officially established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, and in 1949 Congress declared June 14 a national holiday.

20 Facts about the American Flag:
1. Pennsylvania is the only state that observes Flag Day as a state holiday.

2. The flag has been changed 27 times. The final star, for Hawaii, was added in 1960.

3. The flag is normally flown from sunrise to sunset.

4. The flag should not be flown at night without a light on it.

5. The first time the flag was flown after being adopted was on Aug. 3, 1777 in Rome, New York.

6. The designer of the American flag was Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the the Declaration of Independence as a delegate from New Jersey.

7. Betsy Ross sewed the first American flag.

8. There are six American flags on the moon. Five are standing, but Neil Armstrong's fell over.

9. The flag should not be flown in the rain or inclement weather.

10. After a tragedy or death, the flag is flown at half staff for 30 days. It's called "half staff" on land ,and "half mast" on a ship.

11. When your flag is old and has seen better days, it is time to retire it. Old flags should be burned or buried.

12. The Flag Code bans the use of the flag as clothing. That’s right, not USA T-Shirts, bandanas or bikinis.

13. If you like to study flags, then you are a Vexillologist!

14. The colors of the flag have meaning. Red stands for hardiness and valor. White symbolizes purity and innocence. Blue represents vigilance, perseverance and justice.

15. An American flag should never touch the floor or the ground.

16. When displayed on a wall or window the blue field should be in the upper left corner.

17. The military folds the flag with 13 folds, each with symbolic meaning.

18. 50 flags fly 24 hours a day around the Washington monument.

19. 95% of U.S. flags are made in the U.S.A.

20. The U.S. flag always flies at the top of a staff above any other flag.

--Here is a little bit of history and facts about this special day!
The first Armed Forces Day was held on May 20, 1950, and given the β€œTeamed for Defense” theme. It was selected as a way to show that all branches of the military had been united under one department of the government.

This inaugural observance was celebrated with parades, receptions, open houses and air shows. Approximately 10,000 American troops marched past the President in Washington D.C., while 33,000 people in New York City commemorated the occasion β€œunder an air cover of 250 military planes of all types.”

Famous World War II warships were in harbors across the country for the public to see, and precision flying teams filled the skies. The American people came together across the country to honor members of the Armed Forces.

10 Armed Forces Day Facts

Want to learn more about Armed Forces Day? The following 10 facts offer insights on this annual celebration:

1. On July 26, 1947, President Harry S. Truman signed the National Security Act, which united all four branches of the military under one department of the government.

2. In 1947, the National Military Establishment was created as a result of the National Security Act.

3. The Department of Defense replaced the National Military Establishment in 1949.

4. Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday.

5. On the inaugural Armed Forces Day, B-36 bombers flew over every U.S. state capital.

6. This year marks the 67th anniversary of the Armed Forces Day Parade in Bremerton, Washingtonβ€”the longest-running Armed Forces Day parade sponsored by a city.

7. On March 18, 1961, President John F. Kennedy issued Proclamation 3399, making Armed Forces Day an official national holiday.

8. The American flag is traditionally flown on Armed Forces Day. People also frequently wear patriotic colored clothing to commemorate the occasion.

9. Sea, air, and land military exercises are held on Armed Forces Day to recognize services members and display their state-of-the-art equipment.

10. An all-in-one Armed Forces Day is celebrated by nearly 40 other countries, including Armenia, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico, South Korea, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Today we celebrate and sing HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Karol WojtyΕ‚a , also known as St. John Paul II. Today would have been his 103rd birthday.
Here is a little history for everyone to enjoy!
--Karol JΓ³zef WojtyΕ‚a was born in the Polish town of Wadowice. As a boy, WojtyΕ‚a was athletic, often playing association football as goalkeeper.
--After finishing his studies at the seminary in KrakΓ³w, WojtyΕ‚a was ordained as a priest on All Saints' Day, 1 November 1946 by the archbishop of KrakΓ³w, cardinal Adam Stefan Sapieha.
--He was elected by the conclave on October 16, 1978.
--Amazingly his talent for language blossomed, and he learned as many as 15 languages β€” Polish, Latin, Italian, English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Luxembourgish, Dutch, Ukrainian, Serbo-Croatian, Czech, Slovak, and Esperanto,[48] nine of which he used extensively as pope.
--During his pontificate, John Paul II made journeys to 129 countries,[109] travelling more than 1,100,000 kilometres (680,000 mi) while doing so. He was the most traveled Pope in history.

Happy Birthday Saint John Paul II

Pope John Paul II is remembered for his successful efforts to end communism, as well as for building bridges with peoples of other faiths, and issuing the Catholic Church's first apology for its actions during World War II. Under John Paul II, the Catholic Church greatly expanded its influence in Africa and Latin America, and retained its influence in Europe and the rest of the world.
--On 19 December 2009, John Paul II was proclaimed venerable by his successor, Benedict XVI, and was beatified on 1 May 2011 (Divine Mercy Sunday) after the Congregation for the Causes of Saints attributed one miracle to his intercession, the healing of a French nun called Marie Simon Pierre from Parkinson's disease. A second miracle was approved on 2 July 2013, and confirmed by Pope Francis two days later. John Paul II was canonized on April 27 2014 (again Divine Mercy Sunday)
