Happy April 25th!!!
Today is Liberation Day or Festa della liberazione. Also known as the Anniversary of Italy's Liberation (Anniversario della Liberazione d'Italia), Anniversary of the Resistance (Anniversario della Resistenza), or simply April 25 (25 aprile) is a national holiday in Italy that commemorates the victory of the Italian resistance movement against N**i Germany and the Italian Social Republic, puppet state of the N**is and rump state of the fascists, during World War II.

November is inaugurated by two important religious feasts in Italy: All Saints Day and All Souls Day, on November 1st and 2nd, respectively. These are very important days in the Catholic tradition and their roots can be found deep in its past.

La Festa di Ognissanti, or the All Saints Feast, is a religious event celebrated on November 1st. This feast celebrates all the saints of the Catholic calendar.

The origins of this feast date back to very ancient times. In fact, records exist of celebrations held in honor of Christian saints even during the very first centuries of the development of Christianity. Writings related to the dedication by Pope Boniface IV of the Roman Pantheon to “Mary and all the martyrs” on May 13th 609 AD can be considered as the symbolic text inaugurating the tradition.

Picture this: It’s the early 20th century, and you are leaving your hometown in Southern Italy to board a ship that will take you thousands of miles across the Atlantic to build a new life in the United States. You really want to take comfort foods with you, such as your beloved cheese and cured pork, but it’s illegal to transport meats into the country. You can, however, bring cheese. What do you do?

A resourceful group of migrants from Vallo di Diano, a town in Salerno, managed to solve the riddle: You hide the pork inside the cheese. That is how caciocavallo dell’emigrante, literally the “caciocavallo of the migrant,” came to be.

In Padua, that included a sight on Memoria e Luce (Memory and Light) the 9/11 Memorial by architect Daniel Libeskind. It is the only 9/11 Memorial in Europe, inaugurated on September 11, 2005.

The 9/11 Memorial in Padua
The memorial consists of a 6 meter long twisted steel beam, retrieved from the World Trade Center and mounted in a 17 meter high (and 50 long) architectonic glass structure which recalls an open book (mimicking the facades of the Twin Towers) and lights up at night. The book is open in the direction of the Statue of Liberty in New York.

As today is Friday the 13th, we figured what better to talk about than superstitions, especially the Italian kind!

Italians have a long and deep-rooted tradition of beliefs about luck and things that give either good or bad luck. In Italy there are colloquial names for bad luck. Think of:"sfiga" or "jella" (read it as "yella), but the most scary thing for millions of Italians is "Il Malocchio", which translate as "the evil eye".

This Monday, August 2nd, is the centenary of the death of Enrico Caruso who is regarded as the first pop star, an actual phenomenon.

Caruso died at the Vesuvio hotel shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time. He was 48. The cause of death was to peritonitis arising from a burst subphrenic abscess.[The King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III, opened the Royal Basilica of the Church of San Francesco di Paola for Caruso's funeral, which was attended by thousands of people. His embalmed body was preserved in a glass sarcophagus at Del Pianto Cemetery in Naples for mourners to view.

From the Northern "Polenta," to the Southern "Arancini," the typical dishes of Italy are steeped in the particular makeup of their regions' history, geography, culture, and social customs. Delve into the mythical, sensual origin of the tortellini, a Queen's historical visit that gave us the Margherita Pizza, and the way typical cultivations (such as the Turnip vegetable) paired with pasta to create delicious dishes that the entire world tries to imitate.

See Alcide De Gasperi (1881-1954), former Italian prime minister, on 11 June 1946 where Italians vote in an institutional referendum to replace the monarchy with a republic.

The Italian supreme court in a simple but historic ceremony in the parliament building announced the all but complete returns for the referendum on the monarchy. And so, somewhat hesitantly, the Italian Republic came into being.

Ciao a tutti! On Friday June 4th, 2021, My Father's Naples Film Screening & Q/A w/ Film Director Alessia Bottone will start at 12:30pm EST.

Plot: Giuseppe looked out at the horizon as if there was something there that he longed for, as if there was something there that would set him free. As a young girl, his daughter, Alessia (director), had seen him gazing out of the window day after day, always wondering what was there, what held his attention so firmly.

Some years later, during a journey back to Naples, her father’s birthplace, Alessia finds herself observing her father once again. Now too, to her eyes Giuseppe is always in profile, and while the landscape slides past beyond the frame of the train’s window, he tries to grasp every moment with his gaze, tries to capture them and save them from the fast-flowing river of time

Some of you might say, why is there a picture of a barber shop chair on my feed? Our answer might suprise you.
This style of Barbershop Chair is actually at the History of Italian Immigration Museum as part of the Sal Rosati collection.

Please take a second to read about the company below. Then think about scheduling a private tour for you & your friends to see this chair in person & learn about the history of Italian Barbers in America.

The Emil J. Paidar Company was based in Chicago, and it manufactured barber chairs from the early 20th century until the 70’s. At one point in the company’s existence, it was the nation’s top manufacturer. Emil J. Paidar also made several other barber supplies that are both elegant and consistent with the brand. Among others, they include wall fixtures, barber poles, manicure tables, work cabinets and shoe shining stands
