Imagine someone stealing your phone, reading every private message, then blasting them out online. On July 10, 1782 in what is now Levittown, PA, the Patriots lived the 18th-century version of that nightmare. The Doan Gang used this tactic to not only humiliate the Patriots but also to expose sensitive information. Today, Historic Fallsington’s Stagecoach Tavern still stands, reminding us how powerful— and dangerous—information has always been.

On This Day in Fallsington History-
August 21st, 1775: The Falls Company of the First Battalion of Bucks County Associators was formed

But what is an "Associator"?

Because of the role Quakerism and it's emphasis on pacificism played in the governance of Colonial Pennsylvania, unlikely many of the other colonies, in the lead up to the American Revolution Pennsylvania had no standing militia.

Beginning 1775, Pennsylvania patriots supporting independence began to form militia groups, know as "Associators", to provide for the armed defense of the colony. These Associators were organized first at the township level as Companies, then at the county level as Battalions.

The first commanding officer for the Bucks County Associators was Colonel Joseph Kirkbride, from right here in Falls Township.

The Falls Company was organized under the command of Captain Thomas Harvey, 1st Lt. Thomas Janney, 2nd Lt. George Brown Jr., and Ensign Daniel Bunting.

The men who joined the patriot cause this early against the will of many of their families and neighbors, who were for the most part either non-Associator pacifists (primarily Quaker) or openly loyalist to the British Crown.

Many of the names found on the first Falls Company roster represented some of the most prominent families in Fallsington.

HFI was recently gifted a collection of historic Deeds and other documents related to Mahlon Milnor (1755-1833), first owner of Fallsington's tavern. HFI would like to thank member Rebecca Wolf for generously donating this collection to our archives.

Below is a 1773 deed selling an acre of land in Fallsington from John Sotcher, Schoolteacher, and his wife Margaret, to Edmund Lovett, yeoman (farmer).

For those who may not have a lot of practice reading 300 year old handwritten cursive, here are a few highlights:

Property starting at stone on the corner of John Merrick’s land, southwest to the “Great Road that leads from the Falls Meetinghouse to Middletown” (now Main St. Fallsington), then northwest “nine perches and two links” (~149 ft.), to a stone at the corner of the land of Edmund Lovett, then to stone at “the Great Road that leads from Thomas Yardley’s to the Falls Meetinghouse” (now Yardley Ave). The total land was one acre.

The history of the land’s ownership is listed, going back to “William Penn, true and absolute Proprietor and Governor in Chief of the Province”

HFI would like to wish a happy 325th wedding Anniversary to John Sotcher and Mary (Loftus) Sotcher.

Wed on August 16th, 1701, John and Mary both worked for William Penn at Pennsbury Manor, with John serving as the property's overseer and Mary as its head housekeeper. They were married at the Falls Meetinghouse with Penn himself in attendance. The wedding was actually moved up so that Penn could be present before a planned return trip to England. John and Mary's home was Three Arches, a historic property now owned by Falls Township, located on Trenton Rd.

A property deed from 1773 for land in Fallsington sold my their grandson, also named John Sotcher, was recently gifted to Historic Fallsington Inc, and can be viewed by HFI members in our archives.

Today In Fallsington History:
August 15th, 1919 marked the birth of Samuel Moon Snipes. Sam was a long time member of HFI's board of trustees and the Falls Friends Meeting, and was raised at Snipes Farm & Education Center. His mother, Jane Moon Snipes, was a founding member of HFI in 1953 and sold the Gambrel Roof house to us back in 1969.

An attorney, peace activist and historian, Sam is perhaps best remembered as the attorney who helped William and Daisy Myers break redlining and become the first African American homeowners in Levittown in 1957. When an angry mob formed outside the Myers' home and local police refused to intervene, Sam personally stood on their front lawn and held back the crowd until the County Sheriff arrived.

Sam passed away at the end of 2018, at the age 99, but his memory and the contributions he made to our community live on strongly to this day.
