Fall into the swing of the new school year with AT Phila!

I'm excited to start my 29th year at the Curtis Institute of Music (!!) and to return to Philly Swing Classic with some cool ideas to help West Coast Swing dancers move feely and pain-free. I'm also thrilled to bring back group classes in person after a long hiatus - won't you join me for lunch?

Join AT Phila for class on Thursdays in Center City or online on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Need a deeper dive? Schedule a private lesson online or in person.

Meet Lynda.
She’s a collaborative pianist, piano teacher and Alexander Technique teacher-in-training.
She’s going to make one very fine AT teacher!

We’ve been working together consistently for a year now, but we finally got to meet in person at my recent Weekend in Wallingford retreat.
What a marvelous thing!
We delighted in the opportunity to connect in real time and space together and I got to coach her in using her hands to share and receive information from her practice “students”.

This is my first time training a teacher outside the parameters of the Philadelphia School run by Martha Fertman where I taught for a dozen years or so.
I’m so very happy to team up with Martha to train Lynda - they both make it a very easy and gratifying process 🙏

I’ve been teaching group classes for nearly 30 yers,
and my Thursday noon drop-in Lunch-time Alexander was a mainstay of my practice
until the pandemic forced us online in March 2020.

I’m so happy to be back!
Group learning fosters a different kind of learning -
fostering community, curiosity and community.
They are a great way to get started if you are “AT curious” or the perfect way to get a tune-up or deepen your understanding and experience.

It’s also more affordable and makes it easier for more people to access the work and study consistently.

I’m still basking in the glow from my recent Weekend in Wallingford intensive…
The opportunity to have hours to develop a theme and line of inquiry felt soooo luxurious!

It reminds me of my summers in Lincoln, NE and the transformations I experienced and witnessed others making -

What I really appreciated this year was how much the immersion helped me as the leader in addition to helping my students.
That “rinse, repeat” thing really works simply because we get good at what we practice.

What a wondrous time we had together learning and exploring as part of the 4th annual Weekend in Wallingford!

We were a small and mighty group - diverse in our age, where we live, how we like to learn and how experienced in AT we are.

From seasoned teacher, to teacher-in-training to nearly-new to the work -
from Atlanta, New Hampshire, Princeton and just up the road a bit…
We were all performers - with 4 musicians, and actor and me the dancer 💃🏻
Many of us teach, and a few who hope to in the future.

We worked on activities: playing piano, sight reading, public speaking, holding our new horn, playing flute and more…

We mapped the motions of breathing and even embodied our learning with a group choreography to demonstrate the
motions and relationships of spine to ribs to diaphragm and pelvic floor.

We talked a lot about sequence and we read Jeremy Chance’s article A Tale of Two Paradigms as inspiration.

We made a TON of discoveries and we laughed A LOT!!!🤣🤣🤣

We got curious.
We got softer and more open.
We got closer as a cohort.

I can’t wait for the next one 😉

We’re back at last!!
Thursday noon group classes were a very longstanding tradition at ATPhila until the pandemic shut us down in March 2020.

It’s been too long….
and I’ve missed you….

We haven’t been truly gone -
We’ve been meeting online on Mondays, but the time feels right to return to in-person learning in our old time slot on Thursdays at noon.

Come join us for dynamic, experiential learning individually tailored to suit YOU.
Perfect as an introduction to Alexander’s discoveries or as a way to deepen your study.
All are welcome - bringing your curiosity is the only prerequisite 😉

Drop-in for $25/class or commit to a whole month for $75.
Bring your questions and requests and any props you need to work on an activity - pickleball raquet, script, score, instrument, etc.

Huge shoutout to my new student Jon for sharing this cartoon from the New Yorker 🙌🏼

This cartoon got a genuine guffaw out of me and tickled my fancy, to boot 🤣
“Direction overwhelm” is definitely an AT dilemma for many new (and not-so-new) students!

It is the Catch-22 of “thinking in activity” or what I call:
“Constructive Thinking Gone Bad”

The finesse of Alexander’s directions is the “all together”
and I am endlessly fascinated with the challenge of creating
simple
cohesive
dynamic
and effective
cues for my students.

If you are trying to get rid of unnecessary tension by asking yourself to relax -
be careful what you ask for! 🥹

In my experience as an AT teacher closely observing human coordination for over 40 years -
when most of us have the idea to “relax”
we actually get slack and collapse -
which is anything but relaxing since we are making it much more difficult to breathe, digest and move 😝

Next time you experience excess tension try this instead of trying to relax:

Ask yourself to gently make space by letting your feet and/or seat gently direct down into the floor and/or seat in order to allow your whole head to delicately move away from your seat/feet.

Next invite one shoulder to free away from the other shoulder -
and your back to gently free away from your front and your front gently free away from your back.

Extra tip: the less effort you use the better!

Making space allows for more freedom of movement.
