This Thanksgiving, Fort Mifflin celebrates and honors the Lenni-Lenape, the Indigenous people that originally inhabited Philadelphia. Fort Mifflin borders the Delaware River, and the beautiful river shorelines were once the sites of seasonal fishing posts and Lenape settlements before their displacement in 1737. “…the behavior of the enemy…did them honor, nor did they quit the place ‘till their defenses were ruined, and the works rendered to rubbish, setting the works in a blaze when they could defend it no longer.” British Officer, 1777

Fort Mifflin is a monument to perseverance and ingenuity, holding out far longer than anyone could imagine, truly "to the last extremity." The flag flying to the end, Fort Mifflin never surrendered.

We owe a hearty HUZZAH to the reenactors who made history come to life last weekend as we commemorated the 246th anniversary of the greatest bombardment of the American Revolution.

This airplane theme is too fun to let go of, so here is a true story...

Many afternoons British Airways lands at PHL around 3:30 which is just about the time we wrap up the troop appreciation formation on Sunday afternoon of Siege Weekend. You can imagine the predictable response from the Crown forces after their great victory in the last battle. In 2015, we were prepared to capture the scene on camera and.....

If you've visited Fort Mifflin you KNOW we're close to the Airport. In November, 1777 the Fort was just as close to a neighbor not nearly so friendly --- British batteries and two vessels that sailed up the back channel!

Join us Siege Weekend (November 11 & 12) and explore the history of the greatest bombardment of the American Revolution! Tickets in advance at FortMifflin.ticketleap.com or pay at the entrance (cash preferred.)

Welcome to November! We're getting ready for Siege Weekend, our annual commemoration of the battle fought right here. We have all heard "I never knew about this battle" or "why isn't this in all the history books?" almost as many times as we've heard "why did the build the Fort so close to the airport?"

Joseph Plumb Martin himself described this very situation in his memoir as follows: "...there has been but little notice taken of it; the reason for which is, there was no Washington, Putnam, or Wayne there. Had there been, the affair would have been extolled to the skies. No, it was only a few officers and soldiers who accomplished it in some remote quarter of the army. Such circumstances and such troops generally get but little notice taken of them, do what they will. Great men get great praise; little men, nothing. But it always was so and always will be.”

Grab some friends, share our story of heroic perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds and join us for Siege Weekend, November 11 and 12. We've got battles, cooking demonstrations, living history activities, special guests, cannon demonstrations, Schooner Northwind and the opportunity to "join the troops" and learn how to drill with our wooden muskets. Are YOU fit for duty? Find out!

“Hold to the last extremity." A chilling order given to the commander of Fort Miffin in the fall of 1777. Imagine what that command meant to the men stationed there. The courage and valor they displayed during that 5-week siege allowed General Washington time to establish winter quarters at Valley Forge and regroup his army. Before the Fort was finally evacuated on the night of November 15 the garrison destroyed what was left by lighting it ablaze, but left the flag flying. Fort Mifflin never surrendered. Without this courageous defense, who knows what might have happened.

The reconstruction of the Fort began in 1794 and over the next 160 years, it played many roles in the security of our nation: Garrisoned for the War of 1812, a federal prison during the Civil War, and a munitions depot during both World Wars. Finally decommissioned in 1954 and named a National Historical Landmark in 1970, Fort Mifflin holds a unique place in our nation’s history.

Today this National Historical Landmark is in dire need of repair. Although officially owned by the City of Philadelphia, the City only pays for the utilities of the Fort. All other operational expenses, maintenance and restoration are the responsibility of the Fort. The staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers work tirelessly to keep Fort Mifflin operational to educate its many visitors. But the “Valiant Defender of the Delaware” needs help – needs your help!

The Board has established a priority for restoration projects and first on the list is the Blacksmith Shop. It is the first building reconstructed after the Siege and the oldest building at the Fort. How fitting that it leads the way as we prepare Fort Mifflin to serve as a site for celebrating 250 years of American history in 2026. An operational Blacksmith Shop will enhance visitors’ experiences and become a center for heritage craftmanship with live demonstrations. But the price for all of this is steep - we must raise $70,000 to restore the roof, bellows, hearth, windows, and masonry.

We encourage you to visit us, walk the grounds, and touch the soil where the valiant garrison held to the last extremity. We hope that you will consider a generous contribution to this historic effort. We owe it to those brave soldiers that risked all to save our young country.

Want to experience the "Witching Hour" at one of the most haunted locations in the country? There sure was a lot going on in the Delaware River in the fall of 1777. By mid-October Lt. Col. Smith at Fort Mifflin began complaining of lack of support from PA Navy Commodore Hazelwood. Hazelwood's fleet was divided between supporting the defense of Mud Island, and disrupting British efforts to disable the lower chevaux de frise, by Billingsport. Smith felt abandoned as he realized the British intended to construct land batteries aimed at destruction of the little fort's western palisades. Washington sent instructions to Smith to "throw up a bank against the picket, which wou'd strengthen it and make it defensible against shot."

Siege Weekend (November 11 & 12) commemorates the battle that defined the Fort. Join us for living history activities and demonstrations, battle scenarios, and a chance to see the Fort as the British did with 1-hour sails with our friends from Schooner Northwind!

Well hello again. The grounds remain in pretty rough shape but the remediation process begins today. We welcome visitors to enjoy the exhibits, the Soldiers Barracks and the Casemates, but the Parade Ground will be "under construction" Wednesday and Thursday. Full remediation will be a phased process, with the project expanding as areas dry out sufficiently to allow the work.

We appreciate your understanding, and we also REALLY appreciate Making Time is Rad prompt and thorough attention to this project.

On Saturday, September 27, 1777 Lt. Col. Samuel Smith of the 4th MD Regiment arrives at Fort Mifflin, along with soldiers from a number of other regiments after being instructed by General Washington that "the keeping of the fort is of very great importance."

Within a day of arrival, Smith draws a rough sketch and notes it was "a fort walled with freestone on the side opposite to the Jersey shore and the approach by the river; stockaded with pine logs, fifteen inches thick, opposite Province Island; and the approach from above, flanked by three wooded blockhouses, mounting eight-pound French guns in their upper stories. There was, also, an open platform, on which were mounted eighteen-pounders, pointing down river, with one thirty-two pounder being the only piece that pointed on Province Island."

In his appeal for additional troops to be sent to join the garrison he reports that "it was in wretched condition, without ammunition, provisions or stores..."

Fort Mifflin will be closed Thursday through Sunday September 21 to 24.

Please see below for a message from Making Time regarding this weekend's music festival at Fort Mifflin:

We appreciate hearing from the community and want to create an opportunity for discourse as well as share our efforts in making this a better event for the surrounding area this year. We have made some changes to this year's event based on feedback from the community last year and we'd like to share it with you.

We have been working hand in hand with two top of the line audio companies to mitigate our sound at Fort Mifflin. Our sound systems are laid out in-the-round in a four-point layout and there are technical solutions that sound engineers use to control and focus sound. Our team is using cardioid positioning to have more controlled focus of the speaker output in our performance areas which allows for the sound to be focused and contained in the specific performance area and not focused outside of the space. Additionally, we are using noise cancelling techniques for lower frequency bass ranges, which tend to travel farther if not controlled, which will be a great help for communities across the Delaware River.

We are carrying out a series of decibel tests in Camden and Gloucester Counties in New Jersey to ensure that we comply with local sound ordinances, which are 50 decibels during nighttime (10pm - 7am) and 65 decibels during daytime (7am - 10pm). This testing will take place in the evening on Thursday so we can be assured that our planning and systems are functioning in a real world application that results in appropriate sound levels for the surrounding areas. We will also be testing in the evenings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Additionally, we have adjusted our curfew for Sunday evening's programming to 11pm. This is a three hour reduction from last year's 2am curfew on Sunday.

Lastly, we've added a community relations liaison to our team in order to have someone available that we can direct any concerns, feedback, or questions from the community. This will be an additional and direct resource for any residents in the area that can be reached directly via text or phone call at 267-574-0633. They will be attentive and active throughout the week and all weekend.

We hope to continue this discourse and hear any additional concerns and feedback that you may have. We will make ourselves available leading up to the event and throughout the weekend to make sure we are accountable for creating a safe and special weekend for our attendees as well as being a good neighbor to the surrounding communities.

Thank you,
Making Time

The first two walls of Fort Mifflin were built before the Revolutionary War, when Philadelphia was still a part of the British Empire. They were designed by the Royal Engineer Captain John Montresor, and built by Philadelphia stonemason John Palmer. They still stand today, and in some areas are believed to show battle damage from the Siege that took place in 1777. Today of course, the fort sits right next to the Philadelphia International Airport, making it an amazing place to watch planes land and take off. Just don't ask us why they built the fort so close to the airport!

On the topic of planes- join us this weekend for our Battle of Britain event on Sep. 9th! Learn more about the history of early WWII, and how our future allies in the UK staved off endless German bombardments during this critical period in history.

Ahoy there! See the Fort as the British did when you set sail for a one-hour adventure aboard the Schooner Northwind.

Enjoy a "REVOLUTIONARY" experience sailing on the Delaware while learning about the naval battle that took place in 1777 as the British moved north on the river to re-supply their occupying army in Philadelphia. Private Yankee Doodle Weekend sets the stage for a thorough understanding of the defense of the Delaware River as the 4th CT Regiment constructs a model of the underwater obstacles that helped prevent passage of British vessels for almost six weeks in the fall of 1777.

Living history activities and demonstrations reflect all the tasks of daily life in the garrison including black powder demonstrations, meal preparation and more. Visit with our friends from the Museum of the American Revolution who will be on hand with a special activity. Meet Joseph Plumb Martin (Sunday only, special programs at 11 am and 1 pm) as he reflects on his service in the Continental Army while preparing to pen his memoir (published as Private Yankee Doodle.)

Must have a ticket for Yankee Doodle Weekend to participate in the Schooner sails. Tickets linked in comments.
