Robert Mapplethorpe died on this day 32 years ago. His legacy in art was ironically aided by the hate-filled, ultra-conservative homophobe Jesse Helms, who on the floor of the Senate in 1989 denounced his art with the following letter (images 2 & 3). Mono no aware, or "the empathy to things", is a concept that has roots in the literature of the Heian period that deeply impacts Japanese aesthetics. It refers to having wistfulness towards every small fragment in life, such as a drop of water or a fallen leaf, & reminds people of the impermanence of our surroundings. It is well reflected in Suzuki S***a & Misuta Haruo's extraordinary sculptures. S***a's Dandelion, made of copper, brass, titanium & gold, is not painted but colored using the traditional Japanese method of patination: metals are bathed in daikon radish juice, & the resulting chemical reactions produce a variety of hues: https://www.christies.com/en/lot/lot-6307091
