Who’s ready for back-to-school?! While we love soaking up the summer sun just as much as the next person, we are excited about all of the great things that happen in the fall, including our yearly Design Excellence Award and Student Design Competition. The inspiration for the 30th annual Collab Student Design Competition and recipient of this year’s Design Excellence Award is the work of American designer Stephen Burks, a recognized industrial designer, who is deeply invested in the transformative power of craft techniques that challenge the limits of new technologies within industrial production. Burks seeks a new design language of manufactured objects that show evidence of the hand while honoring craftspeople and maker cultures from around the world. For this year’s competition, college or university students are asked to create a vessel (container used to hold things) for the physical world that addresses the design concepts in the work of Stephen Burks, especially blending contemporary design with craft. Recently, the world learned of Saudi Arabia's visions for NEOM or "The Line," a linear megacity in the desert powered by 100% clean energy, and boasting features such as autonomous, high-speed transit, and artificial intelligence. The views on this futuristic build are mixed, but one thing that cannot be denied is this kind of design thinking is not new. In fact, Collab's 1995 DEA award-winner, Michael Graves, along with Peter Eisenman proposed a linear New Jersey in 1965. Learn more from the Hidden Architecture article below:

Philippe Starck, 1997 Design Excellence award recipient with Ian Schrager drew on the mid-century modern style found in Charles and Ray Eames' home in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades neighborhood as a modernist reference in his renovation of Villa W, a boutique wellness hotel on the coast of Saint-Tropez. Created as a little sister to the existing Starck-designed Lily of the Valley hotel, which is located nearby, Villa W is a fitness and wellness hotel located in an existing villa that was renovated by Starck. Yesterday marked the closing of Circus: Bouroullec Designs, an exhibition made possible by The Lisa S. Roberts and David W. Seltzer Endowment Fund in Support of the Collab Design Excellence Award Exhibition. Additional support provided by Collab and in-kind support provided by Mutina and Vitra.

For this year’s Student Design Competition inspired by the work of Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, students were tasked with designing a piece of furniture or an installation through the repetition of a single element. We were thrilled not only with the student work but to see students continuing to engage by attending our Design Excellence Awards and lecture. Take a look at the photos below to see a few Product Design and their instructors at the event with Ronan Bouroullec.

We are proud to announce that Francis Kéré is part of the 2022 list, in the "innovators" category.

Sir David Adjaye writes: "[Francis Kéré] is a trailblazer for his long-standing commitment to formalizing space for both social and environmental good, and in this sense his legacy lives not just in his built work but also in his general practice and methodological spirit. This is manifest not only in Kéré’s completed buildings [...] but in the integrity of his process, which is predicated on knowledge building and knowledge sharing as he works with local communities to inform his creations. His recognition is fully and rightfully deserved." Thank you David for those beautiful words.

Everyone at the studio is proud and beyond happy for Francis and this recognition as one of the most influential people of 2022!

COLLECTING DESIGN | The ninth poster we will highlight from the “First 100 Days” poster series is "Environmental Justice" by .vr, an illustrator and Art Director , born in Puerto Rico, raised in Venezuela, and currently based in Philadelphia. Velázquez-Rivas designed her poster in response to the Trump administration’s continuous rollback of climate policy, which oftentimes, hits Black and brown communities the hardest. “Climate change is a racial justice problem—if you’re a person of color you’re more likely to live in locations terrorized by toxic facilities, flooding, climate-related disease, and other issues…It’s so important to expand the conversation around climate justice — ensuring that all people, regardless of race and ethnicity, get equal protection from the worst effects of climate change.”

This poster, along with twelve others is a gift from Streets Dept's Conrad Benner and Mural Arts Philadelphia through Collab. Learn more about the “First 100 Days” series as well as our other recent acquisitions in the article below.

COLLECTING DESIGN | The eighth poster we will highlight from the “First 100 Days” poster series is "Closing Immigrant Camps" by Krista Dedrick-Lai, a painter and mixed media artist living and working in Philadelphia. Dedrick-Lai designed her poster in response to the Trump administration’s practice of family separation and the detention of immigrants (many of whom are children) in prison camps. “As a mother, I cannot find words for the horror I feel about what has been done to imprisoned immigrant children and families. I have no words for the rage I feel at how little has been done by our government to right its wrongs or even to stop them. Families belong together. Humans, especially children, do not belong in detention. Our country owes an immense debt for the harm done.”

COLLECTING DESIGN | The seventh poster we will highlight from the “First 100 Days” poster series is "$2,000 Stimulus Checks" by Kah Yangni, an illustrator and muralist living in the city of Philadelphia who makes heartfelt art about justice, queerness, and joy. Yangni designed their poster asking the President and Vice President to create a bill for $2000 survival checks through the COVID emergency. “We live in one of the wealthiest countries on the planet. There is no reason for people here to be suffering in the middle of this crisis. We need Biden and Harris to step in and give us the resources we need to survive.”

Earlier this week, it was announced that Burkina Faso native Diébédo Francis Kéré was named the recipient of the 2022 Pritzker Architecture Prize—the first laureate of African descent in the program’s history. In 2016, the Collab Gallery hosted the exhibition The Architecture of Francis Kéré: Building for Community, which included the commission of the site-specific installation Colorscape in the Perelman Skylit Atrium. Inspired by Philadelphia’s rich tradition of textiles and woven crafts, the material used to create the installation was a locally sourced lightweight cord made of interwoven strands. The colorful cord became both massive in volume and a unifying element that enclosed the visitors. In the spirit of communal building practices in Western Africa, the detailing of the installation was designed so that it could be built by individuals without construction experience. As a result, the installation was a team effort physically assembled by employees of Kéré Architecture, local fabricators, Philadelphia Museum of Art staff, Collab members, and volunteers at public programs.

Take a look at some of the views of the exhibition from PMA Museum Photographer, Tim Tiebout 📸 below.

Collab Design Excellence Award Honorees continue to make headlines! 2017 DEA honoree, Patricia Urquiola was recently featured in Dezeen for her renovation of the historic Haworth Hotel at Hope College, transforming the hotel into a design showcase while enhancing the guest experience. The hotel is housed within a multi-level brick building in downtown Holland, within the campus of the private school Hope College. While Urquiola has created several products for Haworth including a sofa and pouf, this project, is her first hotel project in the US.

European brands intermingle with furniture from US company Haworth in a Michigan hotel that has been reimagined by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola.

COLLECTING DESIGN | The sixth poster we will highlight from the “First 100 Days” poster series is "Reallocating Police Budgets" by Jonai Gibson-Selix. Gibson-Selix is a visual designer and photographer based in Philadelphia. Gibson-Selix designed her poster after the October 2020 fatal shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. by Philadelphia police in front of his mother amidst a mental health crisis. According to Gibson-Selix, “What this family needed for this young, Black man was accessible mental health services, but the overinvestment in the police has left minimal funding for such services. Walter’s death is not an isolated event. We must note that police abuse of power and excessive force occurs throughout the country, spanning over a century, so there is no amount of money that can be invested in police reform that will fix this broken system. Fund public services, divest from police.”

This poster, along with twelve others is a gift of Streets Dept's Conrad Benner and Mural Arts Philadelphia through Collab. Learn more about the “First 100 Days” series as well as our other recent acquisitions in the article below.
