Dear friends and fam...I'm proud to say after serving as Chairman or Vice Chairman for almost 30 years I've decided the time has come for me to step down in that direct leadership capacity. Don't get me wrong I'll still be our biggest cheerleader and will never be far from the organization. When I turned 70 last month I realized that I've never given my art career as both visual artist and poet even 50% of my attention. Rush Arts has always come first and rightfully so but I have to give me a first chance to see where this artist thing will take me. Years ago when the accusations against Russell were leveled so many people and sponsors walked away from supporting the organization and never returned. I've begged and pleaded for the last five years to you friends to help us keep our doors open. Many of you already know I bought and renovated the Rush Arts building in Philadelphia on my own to make sure there was a place for kids and artists. Well we are now at the place where this all may be coming to an end. If this fundraiser isn't successful we will be forced to close. It's that simple. I need your support once again please buy tickets donate and come to our Halloween party which is also serving as the moment of my "Retirement".

About Us

In October 2015, Rush co-founder and co-chairman Danny Simmons completed the purchase of a building at 4954 Old York Road in Logan, northern Philadelphia. Rush Arts Philly opened in September 2016 with a show called “Power, Protest, and Resistance: The Art of Revolution”. Through works by dozens of artists—both Philadelphia and New York-based—the inaugural exhibition showcased the intersection of visual art and social action: art in the time of Occupy and the Black Lives Matter movement, art that both reflects and informs the ways that these different streams of protest, language and action are converging and building momentum towards, perhaps, some major cultural shift. One year later, the full ground floor is dedicated to exhibition and program space based on the successful Rush model and mission: to build a community-driven art space that provides opportunities to both local artists and curators, focused on community revitalization and relevance to the people of the surrounding neighborhoods, and arts-based educational opportunities for local youth who can benefit from them the most. Rush Arts Philly enjoys partnerships with several cultural organizations including the African American Museum in Philadelphia, Amalgam Comics, the Barnes, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, and more.
