As part of the American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting & Museum Expo, our team hosted two workshops at the Mütter Museum, challenging guests to reimagine historical moments through the lens of our collections items.

Our staff presented attendees with items from the Museum's large collection of wax and plaster medical teaching models and historical medical instruments and invited the group to explore different creative methods for imagining historical encounters from multiple perspectives.

Thank you to everyone from AAM who joined us for this exciting day!

NOW OPEN! "The Philly Killer" will transport you to the summer of 1976 as Philadelphia prepared to celebrate America's 200th birthday.

When a mysterious and deadly outbreak emerged, rumors of conspiracy and even murder surfaced. What sounds like the plot of a bestselling crime novel is really the true story of Legionnaires' disease, which was referred to as "the epidemic of the century" at the time.

Here's our team putting the finishing touches on the exhibition this week.

Plan your visit today to see this incredible exhibition, which is part of our 250th lineup! Admission is included with your Mütter Museum ticket. "The Philly Killer" is generously funded by the Benjamin and Mary Siddons Measey Foundation.

Anatomia del cavallo, a 1500s veterinary text by Carlo Ruini, was the first book to focus exclusively on the anatomical structure of an animal (rather than a human). Pictured here is a digitized copy of one of the 64 woodcut illustrations in the text, depicting a horse's abdominal cavity opened to reveal the digestive system.

You can learn more about the illustration, its source material, and the author through our Historical Medical Library's digital image library (search ZVh_2.151): https://cppdigitallibrary.org/items/show/2446?search=ZVh_2.151

We are highlighting this illustration on World Digestive Health Day, an observance established by the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) to raise awareness of gastrointestinal diseases and disorders. While this illustration depicts an animal, we hope it reminds our human friends to educate themselves about the prevention, diagnosis, and management of these issues!

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, our Senior Manager of Behavioral Health and After School Programs, Emily, is sharing how bilateral drawing allows for stress relief and emotional processing.

Bilateral drawing is a technique used by many art therapists involving making art with both hands at once. It’s a technique featured in our special exhibition, Creative Processing: Art in Therapy!🎨

Give it a try! You will need:
✏️ A piece of paper
✏️ Two writing utensils to draw with
✏️A way to hold the paper still (tape, etc.)

1.) Position yourself in front of the paper. Begin drawing freely with both hands at once. It does not matter what you draw, but try to have both hands working simultaneously with the same movements.
2.) Change colors or take breaks as desired.
3.) Once you finish, think about how you feel in both body and mind.

What was this experience like for you? How do your emotions differ from before you started drawing? Let us know in the comments!

Najera, MPH, DrPH, FCPP, Director of Public Health at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and David Barnes, PhD, Associate Professor of History and Sociology of Science at the University of Pennsylvania, spoke about the outbreak 50 years ago and how it impacts us today.

On this day in 1921, Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie attended a special meeting at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. During her visit, she donated a piëzo-electric measurement device that she and her husband, Pierre, used to study radioactivity and radium.

This device is one of two original piëzo machines the Curies used in their discovery of radium and polonium. As a forerunner of the modern dosimeter, it was one of the first tools for measuring radioactivity.
