How can you begin to properly sum up 5 weeks of adventure, discovery, and incredible history? 🛖

So insanely thankful for this thoughtful, hardworking, and exceedingly kind crew. Feeling incredibly lucky to be their director. Through even the hottest and toughest days, they've never backed down! ⛏️

This season we've come to love the camp and community we've been privileged to get to know. A massive thank you to all the locals who've stopped by with questions, our beloved boyscouts and their eagerness to learn, and to our new Camp Vandeventer Waterloo family for all their unwavering kindness and support. 🌽

There's still *plenty* to do...both back in the lab and as we plan to continue excavations next season! We'll continue updating here as things develop. Until then...stay tuned for more! ☀️

We had so much fun this weekend leading our full Archaeology Merit Badges Day at Camp Vandeventer! We had over 20 scouts complete their merit badge requirements.

The day was packed full of scouts helping us to screen for artifacts at the Hawkins Hollow Site, thinking like archaeologists about their family heirlooms, practicing throwing atlatls, and learning the importance of ✨context ✨ and washing artifacts.

Clean troweling means boots off! What are we clean troweling you ask? 👀👣

Check out photo 2 for a shot of us working to define the edges of the structure we're uncovering. Seeing a *lot* of burning popping through a shallow layer of fill. 🔥

It's only our first week of excavations at Hawkins Hollow, and we're already finding some amazing things! Very thankful for the help we've received from some passionate locals! ⛏️🏹

This season we're excavating to uncover what we believe to be a rural Native American homestead dating to about the AD 1350's...that's right about the time folks were leaving Cahokia Mounds. ☀️

Check out picture 5 to see some of our earlier geophysics guiding our work and aiding our interpretation! 🗺️

Completely normal Friday Field Prep shenanigans.🔥 We're in the process of building our project flotation tank, which will help us gently process and collect fragile plant remains. 🌻🌽

Much of the final assembly will have to wait till we're in the field at the end of this month...but stay tuned for the final results! What questions do you have about our flotation tank or the plants we're hoping to collect ❓
