Ice delivery coming through! 🧊

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, ice harvesting was a highly lucrative industry in Wisconsin. Ice was vital to brewing companies for the production of lager beer and became a necessary product for those with iceboxes, like the Pabsts. The Wisconsin Lakes & Cartage Co. was a prominent ice harvesting and shipping company that primarily sourced its ice from Pewaukee Lake in Waukesha County. After harvesting, ice was covered in sawdust to prevent excess melting and delivered to customers via horse cart by an iceman as shown here.

PAHS Fall Meeting
by Carole Brinkman
Plans are underway for our fall meeting on Wednesday, October 29th at 7:00 pm in the Steele Building. Our tentative speaker will be the historian of the Benjamin F. Goss Bird Club. The club was named in honor of Mr. Goss, an early Pewaukee settler who arrived here in 1842. He was a renow-ed naturalist and ornithologist whose extensive collection of North American bird eggs is housed in the Milwaukee Public Museum. Mr. Goss and his family have deep Pewaukee roots and are buried in our local Forest Hill cemetery. Plan on attending to learn more about this interesting man.
