Join speaker J. Michael Moore at this Thursday's Petersburg Civil War Roundtable, at 7PM as he shares “John Taylor Wood and The Rebel Horse Marine.”

The Chesapeake Bay was a vital Union communication and supply link from Washington, D.C. to Fort Monroe. With great ingenuity and incredible forethought, Wood developed the “boats on wheels” concept for attacking Union shipping. Wood earned the sobriquet of the Rebel Horse Marine with a naval raiding career that was something out of the action-adventure genre of fiction and foreshadowed the development of commando and special operations warfare in the twentieth century.

J. Michael Moore is employed by the City of Newport News and serves as curator for Lee Hall Mansion and Historic Endview. Moore received a bachelor of arts in history from Christopher Newport University and a master of arts in history from Old Dominion University. During his tenure with the City, he has curated exhibits at several local historic sites, developed historic signage, and led battlefield tours in Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, he has placed Causey’s Mill, Endview Plantation, Lee’s Mill, and Whitaker’s Mill on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, Michael is a popular lecturer for CNU’s Life Long Learning Society. Moore has co-authored two books – The Peninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis in 2005 and Yorktown’s Civil War Siege: Drums Along the Warwick in 2012. In addition, he has served as the editor and photographic editor for twelve books and written articles for Virginia Cavalcade, North & South, Military Collector & Historian, and Mulberry Island Notes. In recognition of his work in public history, the Governor of Kentucky commissioned Moore a Kentucky Colonel in 2014. He is a Newport News native and resides in Historic Yorktown.

Many Civil War generals had post-war aspirations. William Mahone, a Petersburg resident, railroad executive, and Confederate general, began a political career after the war. He became a vocal Readjuster and advocated for expanding the public school system, removing the poll tax, and using industrial power as the impetus for economic recovery. Mahone championed a successful solution to reducing Virginia’s state debt by assigning one-third to West Virginia, refusing to accept one part, and issuing bonds to pay most of the remainder over decades. He became leader of the Readjuster Party in 1877 and fulfilled a campaign promise by establishing Virginia State College (now University) in Ettrick for the city’s African-American population. Mahone was elected to a term in the U.S. Senate from 1881 to 1887. In 1889, he ran for governor as a Republican but was defeated. He maintained an interest in politics until his death from a stroke at 68 in 1895.

Today in 1865, the surrender between Lee and Grant took place in the McLean House at Appomattox County, VA. The Confederates numbered around 28,000 who surrendered and were paroled.

It signaled the end of a four-year long struggle but, roughly 175,000 Confederate remained in the field with other armies and at sea. The CSS Shenandoah, a commerce raider of the Confederate States Navy, was the last Confederate military unit to surrender in Liverpool, England on November 6, 1865.

Spring breaks haven't stopped school field trips from visiting the park. Friday, a school group of 300 students and chaperones sponsored by our partners at the American Battlefield Trust, joined us for a day of learning and fun. The students visited the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, Tudor Hall Plantation and the Breakthrough Battlefield. Their experiences included classroom instruction, hands-on learning and walking where history happened. They learned about the life of a Civil War soldier, plantation life and the life of the enslaved. Our sheep with their new lambs and drilling with the troops added to the memorable time at the park.

It's not too late to book your field trip with us, Visit https://learn.pamplinpark.org/ today to see our offerings to include new Simple Machines and American Revolution programs.
