Hall of the Above Hall of the Above is located in the historic Sonoma County National Bank, an iconic building that marks the gateway to downtown Petaluma.

Our mission is to mobilize the full potential of the building in the service of Community.

A Happy Summer to All, from Hall of the Above!

A personal note from Jennifer & Daniel:

It was three years ago this June that we sat down in the middle of this vacant space and co-signed the lease while our daughters looked on and played “Mission Impossible” on speakerphone. It certainly did feel impossible at times, but after a year and a half of permitting and construction we finally re-opened this iconic building.

Since then, members of the community have rented it for weddings, fundraisers, Quinceaneras, and concerts — exactly the diversity of uses we had in mind when we named our venture “Hall of the Above.” We’ve also produced our own public happenings — such as sold-out Halloween and Valentine’s parties, our Centennial Open House, and Sunday dance events featuring classes and live music.

We’ve got two more dance events before a summer pause in programming to consider changes in format to boost attendance. Swing, Salsa and Country Line Dancing will return in September. Please let us know if you have any suggestions. As always, if you’d like to rent the space for your own event, you know where to find us!

2023-Present: Hall of the Above

We see ourselves as stewards of this building—we’re just tenants with a five-year lease, passing through like other people have done before us. In the meantime, though, we have an extraordinary opportunity to do something for this beautiful building and, by extension, for the community. Hopefully we can get enough momentum that we can be here for many more years to come (let us know if you you interesting in renting the building for your next event!).

We hope everyone gets a chance to come enjoy this amazing space—come through this Saturday to wish this building a very happy 100th birthday! We’ll have some very cool stuff to share and of course, a very large birthday cake 🎂

2009-2018: headquarters of The Seed Bank 🌱

You know them, you love them… we cherish the many murals they created downstairs 🎨

You can now find them at 110 Petaluma Blvd just down the street. The Seed Bank renamed themselves when they moved into the building (from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds), as they couldn’t pass up the perfect naming opportunity.

They moved out in 2018 as they didn’t need quite so much space. There are rumors the benevolent ghosts they knew in the building traveled with them to their new location, but this is yet to be verified. 👻

Come check out their murals downstairs during our Centennial celebration on April 25!

1995–2008: Monarch Interiors & Oriental Rugs

Mr. Taghi Rezaian opened Monarch Interiors in 1995, after running Rezaian’s Persian Rug Co. in Mill Valley since 1967 (you may know the iconic building there as well - swipe for a picture). He kept an incredible selection of rugs, antiques, and paintings, until he retired in 2008.
The bank vault downstairs was a gorgeous rug den, and Taghi’s son, Jason, has memories of getting locked in it—the fire department had to be called. 👀Wildly enough, it was a precursor for an imprisonment of a much more serious kind later on—Jason spent 544 imprisoned in Iran in 2014 while working as the Tehran bureau chief for the Washington Post. He was released January 16, 2016, and is still working as a journalist, and also still dabbles in selling Persian rugs!

✨ Continuing our eras tour of the building ✨

And we need your help! 📢

From 1968-1995 we have... a total black hole of information. Westgate Realty Company and Regan Holding Corp/Legacy Marketing both occupied the building at this time, but we don’t have any photos or stories (just this one of the building from 1977. If you know anyone who has any photos or memories from this time, please tag them below! This empty space in the building’s history is a total bummer. 🙁

✨ Eras tour of the Sonoma County National Bank Building - Part 2 ✨

The building’s tenure as the Sonoma County National Bank was a short one; in 1928, Bank of America purchased the building to serve as its regional branch. In 1930, they also purchased the Bank of Italy across the street to serve as the Petaluma branch. They operated both corner locations until 1968, when they combined the two branches into a new building on the northwest side of Washington Street and Petaluma Boulevard, thus ending the building’s 42-year run as a bank.

Our friends at the Petaluma museum will have some very cool bank ephemera from this time at our Open House on April 25! Come by to check it out and grab a piece of birthday cake 🎂
