The Go Fish Education Center is part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (Fisheries Management Section). Developed as part of the Go Fish Georgia Initiative, this center is core to promoting and increasing participation of fishing in Georgia. The Go Fish Education Center takes visitors on an educational journey through Georgia’s watersheds to learn about our diverse aquatic wildlife, their natural habitats and the impacts of water pollution. Beyond that, the Center serves as a great resource of fishing information for any level of angler – where to go, what to use and when.

Mission: Wildlife Resources Division mission: To conserve, enhance and promote Georgia's fish and wildlife resources and outdoor heritage through science-driven research, management, regulation and education.

Lake Sturgeon Tagging

As part of Georgia DNR’s Lake Sturgeon Reintroduction Program, Go Fish hatchery staff are preparing to release over 260 Lake Sturgeon. These fish have been growing in our hatchery for the past year and a half and have reached a suitable size for stocking. After mildly sedating the fish, staff begin by weighing and measuring each fish and recording this data. Then, each fish is implanted with a Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) Tag. These tags are electronic, implantable microchips which help us to track and identify the fish once released into the Coosa River Basin. The valuable research data we gain from this program will help us to continue managing and growing population sizes.

Successful anglers will also receive a certificate, hat, t-shirt, entry into a grand prize drawing at end of the year, 2 passes to the Go Fish Education Center, and their photo shared on WRD Social Media. 09/24/2019

Even though they are often referred to as catalpa worms, these creatures are actually a species of caterpillar. The Catalpa hornworm is the larval form of the Catalpa Sphinx Moth (Ceratomia catalpa). However, many people just call them "bait." #GoFishGeorgia

The catalpa trees at McDuffie PFA are loaded with catalpa worms! These worms make excellent bream and catfish bait. Hint: Be sure to check out the tree by the office!

McDuffie PFA staff reports: "Fish feeders at Jones and Beaverlodge are excellent spots to fish for bream and catfish. Bream are still being caught throughout the area but especially in Beaverlodge and Bridge Lakes. The afternoon bite is improving as water temperatures begin to cool off. Nice catfish have been biting in Willow. A four-pounder was just caught off one of the ADA piers on the peninsula. Deep water around the siphon drain structures continue to be good spots for catfish, but shallower areas are improving as well."

Get out there and wet a line! More info on McDuffie PFA: http://bit.ly/2Duixyd

This 34 pound blue catfish, along with several smaller specimens, were collected during a standardized electrofishing sample on the Flint River. These fish have been in the lower Chattahoochee River for several years but this is the first time they've been seen in the Flint River. A previous state record blue catfish, weighing in at 80 pounds 4 ounces, was caught below the Columbia Lock and Dam in 2010. #BlueCatfish #FlintRiver #GoFishGeorgia

Threadfin Shad Schooling at Marben PFA

Check out these threadfin shad schooling near the surface in one of the ponds located at Marben Public Fishing Area (PFA). The ponds at Marben PFA are intensively managed for fishing and offer anglers the opportunity to fish for Largemouth Bass, Bluegill, Channel Catfish, Crappie, and Redear Sunfish. It can be common to see shad near the surface of lakes and ponds in the summer months. During this time, the surface can be a good location for shad to avoid predators, feed on plankton, or find higher dissolved oxygen levels. Shoreline vegetation can also be appealing to spawning shad or those seeking cover. Shad are often introduced into reservoirs and ponds as a forage fish. Anglers can increase their chances of catching fish by casting their line around large schools of baitfish, like these. #MarbenPFA #ThreadfinShad #BackToSchool

Now is a great time to catch catfish on the Chattahoochee River, between Columbus and Lake George. Fisheries Management staff with Georgia DNR recently conducted a standardized sample on the middle Chattahoochee River, above Lake George. Good numbers of 10-20 pound flathead catfish and numerous blue catfish were collected.
