The Go Fish Education Center is part of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division (Fisheries Management Section). Developed as part of the Go Fish Georgia Initiative, this center is core to promoting and increasing participation of fishing in Georgia. The Go Fish Education Center takes visitors on an educational journey through Georgia’s watersheds to learn about our diverse aquatic wildlife, their natural habitats and the impacts of water pollution. Beyond that, the Center serves as a great resource of fishing information for any level of angler – where to go, what to use and when.

Mission: Wildlife Resources Division mission: To conserve, enhance and promote Georgia's fish and wildlife resources and outdoor heritage through science-driven research, management, regulation and education.

After being weighed on certified scales, this fish was released. PIT tag data indicates the fish was only 4 years old! The previous largemouth bass record at this PFA was caught only 16 days earlier. If you're looking for monster largemouth bass, Ocmulgee Public Fishing Area is the place to go. Ocmulgee PFA is open year-round and is catch and release fishing only for largemouth bass. This largemouth was sampled at the PFA last week with the following data:
Length: 24.09 inches
Girth: 22 inches
Weight: 13 pounds
Age: Only 4 years old!

PIT tag data tells us that this fish was born in March 2016 at Richmond Hill Hatchery and stocked in the lake in March 2017 as a 3/4 lb and 11 inch, 1-year old bass. It has grown 5 pounds since it was recaptured last Spring as a 3-year old fish giving this fish an average growth of 3.25 pounds per year.

All brood stock bass that produced the fish stocked in Ocmulgee PFA were collected from Georgia waters and that Florida allele percentage varies from 70 to 100%. We carefully select our brood fish from fast growing, healthy populations of largemouth bass to produce the best results for Georgia waters.

Lake Sturgeon Tagging

As part of Georgia DNR’s Lake Sturgeon Reintroduction Program, Go Fish hatchery staff are preparing to release over 260 Lake Sturgeon. These fish have been growing in our hatchery for the past year and a half and have reached a suitable size for stocking. After mildly sedating the fish, staff begin by weighing and measuring each fish and recording this data. Then, each fish is implanted with a Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) Tag. These tags are electronic, implantable microchips which help us to track and identify the fish once released into the Coosa River Basin. The valuable research data we gain from this program will help us to continue managing and growing population sizes.

I thought ya'll might like the little video I shot a while back of the Go Fish Education Center.
Are y'all planning on doing the Christmas program again this year? That was so much fun!
We enjoyed our time yesterday at go fish. Even caught the hawk in action.
The family went to the Fishing Basics Workshop on Saturday at the GoFish Education Center and got to fish in the pond. It was an epic day! Michael and Clint (among others) continued to check with us, as my daughter and I fished, to see if we needed any assistance (we did) and if we had any questions (we did). We learned a lot and came home with a lot of fish (and had pictures to prove it). I'm hoping more of these valuable workshops will be offered in the future. Thank you Michael, Clint, and everyone at the GoFish Education Center!
I visited earlier this week and the aquarium was closed. Has it re-opened yet?
