Black bass are biting at Lake Lanier! This spotted and largemouth bass were caught last week. The largemouth was lured in on a Shaky Head with a Green Pumpkin Trick Worm.

"A topwater bass bite is beginning on Lanier. If it’s overcast, you can call them up from brushpiles on humps and points in 20-25 feet of water by using nosy surface lures and flies. If it's sunny, the fish are hanging deeper and are much harder to bring to the top." - Henry Cowen, Henry Cowen Fly Fishing

GADNR staff place fish attractors in public waterbodies all over the state. Fourth-grade students at Eagle Springs Elementary School, in Byron, built fish attractors earlier this year as part of a STEM education project. Members of the E3 Bassmasters club and staff from the GADNR and US Army Corps of Engineers recently deployed fifteen Mossback fish attractors at five locations in the McKaskey Creek area of Lake Allatoona. The fish attractors were purchased by the E3 Bassmasters using grant funds awarded them by Forty Creek Distillers earlier this year. Three attractors were placed at each location. The sonar image was taken just minutes after deployment. Bass, bream and crappie are expected to take up residence on these structures at various times of the year. Find the location of these new fish attractors (Sites 67-71), as well as Allatoona’s other existing fish attractor sites here:

Descending device workshops set for June
BRUNSWICK, Ga. (May 28, 2019) -- Two free, public workshops aimed at helping offshore saltwater anglers reduce bycatch mortality in snapper and grouper species will be held at two coastal Georgia locations in June.

The workshops will be held Wednesday, June 19, at the Susan Shipman Education Center, One Conservation Way, Brunswick, Ga., and Thursday, June 20, at the Armstrong Center, 13040 Abercorn St., Savannah, Ga. Both events begin at 7 p.m. and will last about an hour.

Dr. Al Seger, a retired veterinarian and conservationist, will present on the use of fish descending devices. These devices help improve the survival rate of caught-and-released fish by safely returning them to appropriate depths and reversing the effects of barotrauma.

“This workshop will provide offshore anglers with a free opportunity to learn how to recognize barotrauma, use best practices to minimize its effect and receive free descending devices to more quickly return fish to the depth at which they were caught,” said Kathy Knowlton, a fisheries management and programmatic specialist for marine fisheries with the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “These are important and timely topics for anglers fishing offshore.”

Workshop participants will be eligible to win free SeaQualizer brand descending devices.

No registration is necessary for either of the workshops. Anyone with questions may contact Tyler Jones, communications specialist with the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, at 912-262-3140 or [email protected].

"This past weekend I took my boys to the Buck Shoals Kids Fishing event (KFE) in White County. My oldest, Carsyn, caught a really nice size Bluegill. Although my two year old did not catch anything, he sure did have a great time watching his big brother reel that special catch in! We will definitely be attending more of these events this summer! Such a great place to get out and spend some quality time with your kids while enjoying the beautiful North Georgia scenery. Best part- watching your kid’s eyes light up once that bobber goes under water! Just another plus to add to the list of working with such an amazing group of people who make this happen! Thanks, Lauren"

Buck Shoals WMA will host a monthly KFE throughout this summer. For more information on Buck Shoals WMA, visit https://georgiawildlife.com/buck-shoals-wma

World Fish Migration Day

World Fish Migration Day 2020 is one year away. Here is a brand new documentary, titled "Love Flows," to inspire you. If you're interested in planning an event, fundraiser, or service project to celebrate, visit www.WorldFishMigrationDay.com

#WorldFishMigrationDay #HappyFish

In exactly one year we celebrate the next #WorldFishMigrationDay. We are excited to release #LoveFlows, featuring the famous actor Jasper Pääkkönen and Nat-Geo Wild host Monster Fish with Zeb Hogan !

This day and the work of so many organizations across the globe is incredibly important as there is currently a 40% decline in #migratoryfish populations. We thank all of our participants for their enthusiasm and contribution to make this film and celebration possible. Continue to engage, educate and excite others about migratory fishes; your local impact is part of the global difference! Join this global movement on May 16th 2020 and build a future of life.
