Not every museum gets a visit from the first lady of the United States of America, but today the Peoria Riverfront Museum is proud to announce that we are officially Abigail Adams approved!

Through the captivating performance of premier historical reenactor Leslie Goddard, our nation's second first lady came to life today at the museum, sharing the story of one of the most prolific advocates of women's rights, abolition, and education in American history.

We were honored to have Goddard visit to bring to life the American history on display in current exhibition "The Promise of Liberty," the Peoria Riverfront Museum's centerpiece exhibition in a series celebrating America's 250th.

See real artifacts from Abigail Adams, on display in "The Promise of Liberty" today.

"Museum Conversations: An Afternoon with Abigail Adams"

Historian and performer Leslie Goddard brings Abigail Adams to life in a captivating reenactment presented in connection with current exhibition "The Promise of Liberty." Through Adams’ own words, which can be viewed in the exhibition, and experiences in early American history, the performance shines a powerful light on the vital role women played in shaping the nation’s founding ideals.

On this day 63 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. made a speech that changed the nation.

Standing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. on August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. made his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech.

See one of the rare mimeographs of that very speech on display at the Peoria Riverfront Museum in "The Promise of Liberty" today.
Plan your visit on our website: RiverfrontMuseum.org

When you visit, notice that the words "I Have a Dream," for which the speech is so iconic, are not featured. Dr. King improvised those words after a friend in the audience, Mahalia Jackson, called out: "Tell them about the dream, Martin!" Thus inciting one of the most famous moments in American history.

As we continue to celebrate the largest individual donation in the museum's history and the creation of the Glen and Polly Barton Endowment Fund for Education, we reflect on the support of the singular Polly Barton.

Polly made the initial investment to start the Museum flagship program, the Every Student Initiative, and her legacy lives on through this endowment fund.

Polly, and the Barton family's philanthropy has made an incredible difference for the Peoria Riverfront Museum. In 2024, Polly was awarded the highest honor the museum can bestow, the Peoria Riverfront Museum's James Smithson Leadership award, for her endless support, her constant care for our community, and her steadfast philanthropic spirit.

The goal of the Every Student Initiative, created in 2017, is to engage every student from public, private and homeschool organizations in central Illinois, by funding curricula-friendly educational visits to the museum. The program support includes free family passes for each student.

Today, the museum works with over 55 fully sponsored schools in public and private school districts across central Illinois, welcoming thousands of students to see some of the greatest exhibitions of art, history, science and achievement right here, at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.

Today the Peoria Riverfront Museum celebrated the largest individual gift in the museum's history: a $5 million gift creating the Glen and Polly Barton Endowment Fund for Education, which will support a central museum program, the Every Student Initiative.

Learn more about the Every Student Initiative on our website today: RiverfrontMuseum.org

This generous gift from the Barton Family represents the largest individual in the history of the museum, and ranks as one of the biggest known endowment gifts dedicated to student access for a museum anywhere in the nation.

The fund dramatically builds on the earlier educational endowment gift by former foundation board member and original ESI start-up funder Polly Barton in 2023 and on her founding gift launching the program in 2017. This fall marks the 10th anniversary for the ESI program, which now fully supports over 55 schools and allows for free visits for students to the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
