Today is our last day of the semester in our volunteer collections lab! Every year, we recognize one of our volunteers with the "Volunteer of the Year" award. πŸ†

This year's award goes to Adam Drobecker, a UWF Anthropology student who began volunteering with us during the 2025-2026 school year. We are grateful to Adam for contributing his time and enthusiasm to our lab this year! As a bonus, he got a signed copy of Dr. Judy Bense's book Unearthing Pensacola.

Adam is pictured here with Kate Schreiber, our graduate assistant who managed our volunteer lab this year. Thank you so much for everything you do, Kate! Our lab will reopen during the fall semester, so if you are interested in joining us, keep an eye out on social media or email us at [email protected] for more information.

For this Throwback Thursday, we're highlighting Katherine Sims! πŸ—ΊοΈ

If anyone knows Katherine, then you know that she is the Research and Collections Archaeologist at the City of St. Augustine. As a part of her job, she works with the city archaeologist, Dr. Andrea White, and fellow UWF alumni Kate Ganas to conduct excavations within St. Augustine's 18 archaeological zones located in and around the historic downtown area. In accordance with the city's preservation ordinance, she makes sure that any site within that area is properly excavated and that the artifacts recovered are properly curated for future research.

Pictured to the left is Katherine promoting FPAN at a local event at Torreya State Park. While at the University of West Florida, Katherine honed her skills with ArcGIS, and she uses them to create detailed maps and figures that show so much information about archaeology in St. Augustine!
