Join us for the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the American Revolution Museum of Southern New Jersey at the historic Benjamin Cooper Tavern at Coopers Point in Camden, New Jersey.
The museum shares the stories of how the people of Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem counties experienced the American Revolution here in Southern New Jersey.
Dedicated to the Declaration of Independence’s promise that “All Men Are Created Equal,” the museum also reveals how people in Southern New Jersey spent the next 250 years working to make that promise a reality.

An interesting piece of history from the Revolutionary War period in Lower Penns Neck: With a population less than 500, we had THREE churches! The modest church buildings were erected in:
1717 The Swedish Lutheran Church at Penns Neck called St. George
1748 The Penns Neck Presbyterian Church (on Main Street)
1777 The Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church (Broadway & Ft.Mott) This building project took place during the Revolutionary War!

All three had cemeteries that are still here. When St. George's enlarged and rebuilt, they did it on the same property. Trinity rebuilt on the same property, then in 1886 built a church closer to the towns people at it's current location on Broadway. The Presbyterian Church was demolished in the early 1800s.

Happy Father's Day to the "Father of the American Navy", Commodore John Barry. Barry was the first captain placed in command of an American warship commissioned for service under the Continental flag during the Revolutionary War. He spent quite a bit of time operating in the Delaware Bay and River and often relied on using Salem Cove as a hiding place from British ships that patrolled the river. The British ship Roebuck chased Capt. Barry in the Lexington for 8 hours in Delaware Bay prior to their skirmish several days later. Capt Barry led the Continental Navy from Philadelphia down to the skirmish on the Delaware River on May 8-9, 1776. That skirmish took place at the mouth of the Christina River and eventually ended up over by Helm's Cove near Carneys Point/Penns Grove, NJ. In February 1778 he ferried Gen. Anthony Wayne's foraging party of about 500 soldiers from New Castle to Finn's Point. This ended up being the Great Cow Chase, and when they arrived in Valley Forge on March 1st, it literally saved the lives of the starving soldiers who were near death.
